Abstract This article describes design factors for products used in engineering applications. The article groups these factors into three categories: functional requirements, analysis of total life cycle, and other major factors. These categories intersect and overlap, constituting a major challenge in engineering design.

System design for the human factor
Proceedings of the Sixth SIGCPR conference on Computer personnel research - SIGCPR '68, 1968The performance of total business oriented electronic data processing systems is not simply a function of good computer programming because the computer is still only one component in the middle of the system as many scarred veterans of data processing wars will testify. The other component, people, has been largely ignored until recently.

Design Factors in the Assessment of Intelligence
Annals of Otology, Rhinology & Laryngology, 1979The use of intelligence tests to assess the effects of otitis media on the development of children is discussed in this article. An overview of the development of intelligence tests is provided and some of the limitations and central issues of controversy concerning intelligence testing and the IQ are reviewed. Basic intelligence tests are described in

Factors influencing the design of microsystems
Proceedings of the IEEE 2004 Custom Integrated Circuits Conference (IEEE Cat. No.04CH37571), 2004The engineering challenges of bringing microsystems products to market are substantially more broad than with conventional microelectronics. Harsh operating conditions and nonstandard materials result in effects not typically of concern for IC designers.

This panel discussion focused on teaching human factors design. Since design needs supporting analysis and a science-knowledge basis, different educational strategies were considered for phasing these subjects. Results of a recent survey of various institutions teaching human factors was reporte and interpreted by the panel. Various educational issues

Design Factors II. Design of Seating
1965Modern man spends so much of his time either sitting or lying down that it might be said that homo sapiens has ceased to be an upright animal ! This being so, it is not surprising that a great deal of research has been done into the design of good seats.

Abstract The central approach of human factors engineering is the systemic application of relevant information about human characteristics and behavior to the design of human-made objects, facilities, and environments that people use. This article focuses on the elements that are considered for an acceptable level of human performance.

Nevins and Whitney (1991) define concurrent engineering (CE) as ‘Design of the entire life cycle of the product simultaneously using a product design team and automated engineering and production tools’. Its objective is to ‘design it right in the first place’. A product is manufactured, handled, installed and used by humans.
