Compared with other groups of unicellular freshwater algae, desmids lend themselves well to biogeographical studies since, at species level, identification is often relatively easy, whereas high ecological demands use to curtain their geographical distribution. Dispersal of Desmids by Waterbirds

Abstract Vegetative cells from nine clones of desmids were fed to both mallard ducks and killdeer. Viable cells of seven were recovered from the feces after they had been in the digestive tract for at least one hour. Vegetative cells from these same clones were readily killed by desiccation.
