Long‐term phytoplankton community dynamics in Lake Stechlin (north‐east Germany) under sudden and heavily accelerating eutrophication

open access: yesFreshwater Biology, Volume 68, Issue 5, Page 737-751, May 2023., 2023
Abstract Climate warming and legacy phosphorus (P) in sediments are two main factors counteracting current efforts to prevent eutrophication of temperate freshwater lakes and reservoirs. Climate warming impacts lacustrine thermal regimes, accelerates harmful cyanobacterial growth, and increases the probability of periodic anoxic bottom conditions ...

Biomineralization of ordered dolomite and magnesian calcite by the green alga Spirogyra

open access: yesSedimentology, Volume 70, Issue 3, Page 685-704, April 2023., 2023
Abstract The formation of ordered dolomite under Earth's surface conditions remains a challenge, although many researchers have now shown that microbes can facilitate the precipitation of this common mineral. This study provides the first evidence of dolomite biomineralization by the green alga Spirogyra (Zygnematales, Chlorophyta), a globally ...

Changes in species composition of desmids in the "Błoto" peat bog (the Niepołomice Forest) from 1954 to 2001

open access: yesActa Societatis Botanicorum Poloniae, 2011
After the lapse of 48 years, a renewed study on species composition of desmids was carried out at the Błoto peat bog in the Niepołomice Forest. During this period, the peat bog underwent far-reaching changes caused by man.

Effects of chloride and nutrients on freshwater plankton communities

open access: yesLimnology and Oceanography Letters, Volume 8, Issue 1, Page 48-55, February 2023., 2023
Abstract Increasing chloride concentrations threaten freshwater zooplankton. We questioned the protectiveness of the Canadian Water Quality Guideline for chloride because it is based on individual species studied under laboratory conditions and does not account for potential interactive factors, such as nutrient concentration.

Analyses and localization of pectin-like carbohydrates in cell wall and mucilage of the green alga Netrium digitus [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
The unicellular, simply shaped desmid Netrium digitus inhabiting acid bog ponds grows in two phases. Prior to division, the cell elongates at its central zone, whereas in a second phase, polar tip growth occurs.
