A sedimentary DNA perspective about the influence of environmental and food‐web changes on the microbial eukaryotic community of Lake Biwa

open access: yesFreshwater Biology, Volume 69, Issue 11, Page 1553-1567, November 2024.
Abstract The impacts of environmental change on Lake Biwa have been explored for decades, with water monitoring and palaeolimnological studies revealing how environmental forcing, including climate warming, eutrophication, water level manipulation and human manipulation of fish populations, has influenced the food web of Lake Biwa.

Desmids flora analysis of the peat-bog Lubiec in 1984-1995 [PDF]

open access: yes, 2000
In 1984-1995 the desmid flora was analysed in the Lubiec peat-bog. Of 206 taxa recorded as many as 43.2% were accessory and accidental species, which testifies to a high variability of this desmid community. The Thumark Q green algae factor was applied

A mesophilic relative of common glacier algae, Ancylonema palustre sp. nov., provides insights into the induction of vacuolar pigments in zygnematophytes

open access: yesEnvironmental Microbiology, Volume 26, Issue 8, July 2024.
We introduce a new species of zygnematophytes, Ancylonema palustre sp. nov., discovered in moorlands. This species exhibits a reddish intracellular pigmentation, a characteristic shared with its glacier‐dwelling relatives. Utilizing bacteria‐free cultures, we provide detailed descriptions of both vegetative and sexual processes.

How many species of algae are there? A reprise. Four kingdoms, 14 phyla, 63 classes and still growing

open access: yesJournal of Phycology, Volume 60, Issue 2, Page 214-228, April 2024.
Abstract To date (1 November 2023), the online database AlgaeBase has documented 50,589 species of living algae and 10,556 fossil species here referred to four kingdoms (Eubacteria, Chromista, Plantae, and Protozoa), 14 phyla, and 63 classes. The algae are the third most speciose grouping of plant‐like organisms after the flowering plants (≈382,000 ...
