The major cross-links of mature bovine Descemet's membrane have been compared with those of the anterior lens capsule. Both basement membranes contained hydroxylysinonorleucine but Descemet's membrane also contained two components with the chromatographic properties of desmosine and isodesmosine.

Desmosines: A rapid single-column isolation procedure

Abstract A simple and rapid method is described for the isolation of the desmosines from elastin. Elastin is hydrolyzed with 6 N HCl in a conventional manner, treated with decolorizing charcoal, and adjusted to pH 2.8. Gel permeation on Bio-Gel P-2 resolves an ultraviolet-absorbing peak eluted between cytochrome c and cyanocobalamin.
