Destination therapy: time for real progress

Nature Clinical Practice Cardiovascular Medicine, 2008
Both prognosis and quality of life are poor for severely symptomatic patients with stage D heart failure, and treatment options are limited. Few individuals are eligible for cardiac transplantation, and ventricular resynchronization therapy provides only marginal benefit in select patients.

Ventricular assist devices as destination therapy

Surgical Clinics of North America, 2004
The prospects for long-term mechanical circulatory support are improving. Axial flow pumps are a promising competitor to pulsatile first-generation LVADs, although the two may serve different patient populations. Centrifugal pumps are in the development phase and seem to require less anticoagulation.

Destination Therapy: Patient Selection and Current Outcomes

Journal of Cardiac Surgery, 2010
Long-term left-ventricular assist device (LVAD) support as destination therapy (DT) is a promising new alternative for the growing population of patients with advanced heart failure. In this article, we summarize the clinical trials that led to the approval of LVAD use as DT in the US national policies regulating candidate selection and DT center ...

Outcomes Using LVADs for Destination Therapy

2017
The goal of this chapter is to present the data from pivotal trials that have studied the outcomes of patients with end-stage heart failure who were deemed ineligible for heart transplantation in whom left ventricular assist devices were used as destination therapy. Data suggest left ventricular assist devices are superior to optimal medical therapy in

An Implantable Aortic Valvo-pump for Destination Therapy

Cardiovascular Engineering, 2006
To investigate the possibility of a long-term applicable left ventricular assist device, a 23 mm outer diameter and 31 g weight implantable aortic valvo-pump was developed. It consists of a rotor and a stator; the rotor has a driven magnets assemble and an impeller, the stator has a motor coil with iron core and a outflow guide vane. The device locates
