Heat-assisted detection and ranging

Nature, 2023
Machine perception uses advanced sensors to collect information about the surrounding scene for situational awareness1-7. State-of-the-art machine perception8 using active sonar, radar and LiDAR to enhance camera vision9 faces difficulties when the number of intelligent agents scales up10,11.

Detection of Edges Using Range Information

IEEE Transactions on Pattern Analysis and Machine Intelligence, 1983
Range data provide an important source of 3-D shape information. This information can be used to extract jump boundaries which correspond to occluding boundaries of objects in a scene and ``edges'' which correspond to points lying between significantly different regions on the surface of objects.

Passive range estimation and range rate detection

Proceedings of the 2000 IEEE Sensor Array and Multichannel Signal Processing Workshop. SAM 2000 (Cat. No.00EX410), 2002
The problem of interest is a rapidly closing object (e.g. a torpedo) emitting broadband and narrowband acoustic signatures. A high negative range rate is indicative of a torpedo threat, and good range-bearing estimates provide good target localization.

Light detection and ranging (lidar): introduction

Journal of the Optical Society of America B, 2021
In this introduction we provide an overview of the papers that were accepted for publication in the special issue on light detection and ranging (lidar). Four of the papers were published in JOSA A, and four were published in JOSA B. They represent different aspects of this important and fast-growing field while showing the relevant state-of-the-art ...

Ballistic range model detection system

Applied Optics, 1976
A model detection system designed for ballistic range use is described in which a fast lens and photomultiplier detect the light reflected and/or refracted by the model as it passes through an incident light beam. The system is capable of detecting transparent as well as opaque models of various compositions with diameters as small as 1/32 in. (0.70 mm)
