DRIVER'S VISUAL RANGE DETECTION

SAE Technical Paper Series, 1972
<div class="htmlview paragraph">This paper presents the results of a study to determine the factors required to monitor visual range. Equations are presented that indicate that it is possible to monitor visual range by using measurements of scene luminance, atmospheric backscatter, and ambient light levels.

Long-range person and vehicle detection

Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning in Defense Applications II, 2020
Automatic detection and tracking of persons and vehicles can greatly increase situational awareness in many military applications. Various methods for detection and tracking have been proposed so far, both for rule-based and learning approaches. With the advent of deep learning, learning approaches generally outperform rule-based approaches.

Range-resolved detection of potassium chloride using picosecond differential absorption light detection and ranging

Applied Optics, 2015
A laser diagnostic concept for measurement of potassium chloride (KCl) and potentially other alkali compounds in large-scale boilers and furnaces of limited optical access is presented. Single-ended, range-resolved, quantitative detection of KCl is achieved by differential absorption light detection and ranging (DIAL) based on picosecond laser pulses ...

Acoustic detection and ranging using solvable chaos

Chaos: An Interdisciplinary Journal of Nonlinear Science, 2013
Acoustic experiments demonstrate a novel approach to ranging and detection that exploits the properties of a solvable chaotic oscillator. This nonlinear oscillator includes an ordinary differential equation and a discrete switching condition. The chaotic waveform generated by this hybrid system is used as the transmitted waveform. The oscillator admits

Short-range detection and ranging of fast-moving objects

SPIE Proceedings, 2007
Detection of fast moving objects is challenging. Even more challenging is accurately locating them in space. We present optical sensors that can locate fast moving objects that penetrate into virtual optical screens. Each sensor is composed of several laser sources and detectors, and the three-dimensional mapping is based on combinations of range ...

Threshold detection in pulsed laser ranging

Applied Optics, 1976
Suzaki and Tachibana (1972, 1973) have developed a method for detecting the arrival time of the return pulse in pulsed laser ranging based on the identification of the time at which the preset threshold level is exceeded by the output of the optical detector.

Detection range prediction for infrared detection systems

Proceedings of the IEEE, 1963
A mathematical model from which detection range may be predicted is developed. The model is specific to systems that base detection upon the exceeding of a threshold voltage by signal plus noise voltage. It is not restricted to a particular electromagnetic wavelength region. The model is applied to a passive infrared detection system.

Light Detection and Ranging

2016
Light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation, or the laser, dates to about 1957, emerging in theoretical papers by Townes and Schalow. The term laser was coined by Gould, who eventually received credit for this. The laser concept has three fundamental elements from a remote-sensing perspective.
