Learning Safe and Optimal Control Strategies for Storm Water Detention Ponds [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2021
Storm water detention ponds are used to manage the discharge of rainfall runoff from urban areas to nearby streams. Their purpose is to reduce the hydraulic impact and sediment loads of the receiving waters. Detention ponds are currently designed based on static controls: the output flow of a pond is capped at a fixed value.

Intelligence gathering by capturing the social processes within prisons [PDF]

open access: yesInternational Journal of Pervasive Computing and Communications, 6(4):423-431, 2010, 2008
We present a prototype system that can be used to capture longitudinal socialising processes by recording people's encounters in space. We argue that such a system can usefully be deployed in prisons and other detention facilities in order help intelligence analysts assess the behaviour or terrorist and organised crime groups, and their potential ...

Active particles in geometrically confined viscoelastic fluids [PDF]

open access: yesNew J. Phys., 21 093058 (2019), 2019
We experimentally study the dynamics of active particles (APs) in a viscoelastic fluid under various geometrical constraints such as flat walls, spherical obstacles and cylindrical cavities. We observe that the main effect of the confined viscoelastic fluid is to induce an effective repulsion on the APs when moving close to a rigid surface, which ...

Algorithmic Risk Assessments Can Alter Human Decision-Making Processes in High-Stakes Government Contexts [PDF]

open access: yesProceedings of the ACM on Human-Computer Interaction 5, CSCW2, Article 418 (October 2021), 2020
Governments are increasingly turning to algorithmic risk assessments when making important decisions, such as whether to release criminal defendants before trial. Policymakers assert that providing public servants with algorithmic advice will improve human risk predictions and thereby lead to better (e.g., fairer) decisions.
