The propagation characteristics of curved detonation wave: Experiments in helical channels

Proceedings of the Combustion Institute, 2019
Abstract The propagation characteristics of curved detonation have been extensively investigated in the present study using three types of stoichiometric test mixtures (2H2+O2+3Ar, C2H4+3O2, and CH4+2O2) in a new experimental facility consisting of a straight channel joined to a helical channel. The helical channel with different inner radii (Ri = 60

Influence of equivalence ratio on the propagation characteristics of rotating detonation wave

Experimental Thermal and Fluid Science, 2018
Abstract An experimental study on a rotating detonation engine was carried out to analyze the initiation and propagation characteristics of rotating detonation wave. Propellants were hydrogen/air mixture and ignited by a pre-detonator. The rotating detonation wave was initiated and propagated successfully with various equivalence ratios ...

Effect of turbine blades on rotating detonation wave propagation characteristics

Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part G: Journal of Aerospace Engineering
This study investigated the impact of turbine blades on the rotating detonation combustion process and analyzes the interaction mechanisms between detonation-induced oblique shock waves and the turbine blades. The results revealed that oblique shock waves induce multiple reflected shock waves within the blade passageways, leading to boundary layer ...

Effect of Curvature on the Detonation Wave Propagation Characteristics in Annular Channels

46th AIAA Aerospace Sciences Meeting and Exhibit, 2008
Present study examines the detonation wave propagation characteristics in annular channel. A normalized value of channel width to the annular radius was considered as a geometric parameter. Numerical approaches used in the previous studies of detonation wave propagation were extended to the present study with OpenMP parallelization for multi-core SMP ...

Quenching of detonation and some characteristics of its propagation in narrow channels

Combustion, Explosion, and Shock Waves, 1969
1. We have studied the quenching of detonation in 30% H2+70% air, 2H2+O2, CH4+2O2 and C2H2+2O2 mixtures in narrow channels. It has been established that quenching occurs at the same values of the initial (before detonation) pressure and flame velocity as for deflagration.

Characteristics of Self-Excited Wave Propagation in a Non-Premixed Linear Detonation Combustor

2022
The interaction and behavior of detonation waves propagating in a linear detonation combustor (LDC) were studied to identify the coupled thermoacoustic-chemical phenomenon responsible for self-generated and self-sustained detonation waves. The LDC was operated with natural gas and gaseous oxygen over a wide range of equivalence ratios and optically ...

Effects of a turbine guide vane on hydrogen-air rotating detonation wave propagation characteristics

International Journal of Hydrogen Energy, 2017
Abstract The rotating detonation engine is a new machine that can generate thrust via continuous rotating detonation waves (RDWs). In this study, experiments were performed on a structure combining a rotating detonation combustor (RDC) and a turbine guide vane to investigate the propagation characteristic of hydrogen-air RDW.

Propagation characteristics of ethylene–air rotating detonation waves under modulated equivalence ratios

Physics of Fluids
Incoming flow disturbances severely destabilize rotating detonation waves (RDWs), presenting key challenges for practical rotating detonation engine (RDE) applications. A series of ethylene–air experiments was conducted in a hollow combustor, with detonation initiated via aft-mounted spark ignition.
