Aqueous Synthesis of Poly(ethylene glycol)‐Amide‐Norbornene‐Carboxylate for Modular Hydrogel Crosslinking

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Interfaces, EarlyView.
An all aqueous synthesis of poly(ethylene glycol)‐amide‐norbornene‐carboxylate (PEGaNBCA) is developed via reacting carbic anhydride with amino‐terminated PEG. PEGaNBCA is readily crosslinked into hydrogels by click chemistries. PEGaNBCA crosslinked thiol‐norbornene hydrogels are hydrolytically stable but can be rendered hydrolytically labile through ...

Precise calculation of transition frequencies of hydrogen and deuterium based on a least-squares analysis [PDF]

open access: yes, 2005
We combine a limited number of accurately measured transition frequencies in hydrogen and deuterium, recent quantum electrodynamics (QED) calculations, and, as an essential additional ingredient, a generalized least-squares analysis, to obtain precise ...

Migratory connectivity of Blue-winged Teal: risk implications for avian influenza virus introduction to Cuba

open access: yesFrontiers in Bird Science
In recent years, the complex evolution of the highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) situation reflects a change in the eco-epidemiology of the causative agent which, among other demands, renews the need for better understanding of the connectivity ...

Spatially Controlled 3‐D Multiplexed Aptamer Patterning in Hydrogels

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Interfaces, EarlyView.
A hydrogel platform based on norbornene‐functionalized polyvinyl alcohol enables high‐resolution, 3‐D multiplexed patterning of DNA aptamers via two‐photon polymerization. Two distinct aptamers are covalently immobilized with single micron‐scale precision across the x, y, and z dimensions.

Development of a Compact Neutron Source based on Field Ionization Processes

open access: yes, 2010
The authors report on the use of carbon nanofiber nanoemitters to ionize deuterium atoms for the generation of neutrons in a deuterium-deuterium reaction in a preloaded target. Acceleration voltages in the range of 50-80 kV are used.

Experimental study of fusion neutron and proton yields produced by petawatt-laser-irradiated D2-3He or CD4-3He clustering gases [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
We report on experiments in which the Texas Petawatt laser irradiated a mixture of deuterium or deuterated methane clusters and helium-3 gas, generating three types of nuclear fusion reactions: D(d, 3He)n, D(d, t)p and 3He(d, p)4He.

Cholesterol absorption efficiency declines at moderate dietary doses in normal human subjects

open access: yesJournal of Lipid Research, 1999
While unphysiologically large cholesterol doses are known to reduce percent cholesterol absorption, smaller amounts are reported to have no effect in human subjects.

Stable Isotopic Evidence of Paleorecharge in the Northern Gulf Coastal Plain (USA)

open access: yesHydrology
Stable isotope abundances (δ18O and δ2H) in regional aquifers can provide important paleoclimate information. However, identifying paleoclimate signals can be complicated by cross-formational mixing and, potentially, by isotopic diffusion between ...

Lamb Shift of Muonic Deuterium and Hydrogen [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2005
My previous calculations of the Lamb shift in muonic hydrogen are reviewed and compared with other work. In addition, numerical results for muonic deuterium are presented.

The Deuterium Abundance in the Local Interstellar Medium [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
As the Galaxy evolves, the abundance of deuterium in the interstellar medium (ISM) decreases from its primordial value: deuterium is "astrated". The deuterium astration factor, f_D, the ratio of the primordial D abundance (the D to H ratio by number) to the ISM D abundance, is determined by the competition between stellar destruction and infall ...
