Ionization constants for deuterium oxide in deuterium oxide-organic mixtures
Journal of Solution Chemistry, 1972A potentiometric method using a glass electrode has been applied to determination of ionization constants for deuterium oxide (D2O) in binary mixtures of D2O with dioxane, tetrahydrofuran, acetone, dimethylsulfoxide, CH3CH2OD, and CH3OD at 25°C.

Mitotic Arrest by Deuterium Oxide
Science, 1960In marine invertebrate eggs, where cell divisions occur without growth, deuterium oxide produces arrest of, or serious delay in, mitosis and cytokinesis. All stages requiring assembly or operation of mechanical structures in the cytoplasm are sensitive to D 2 O. The block is reversible in some cells.

The growth of algae in deuterium oxide
Biochimica et Biophysica Acta, 1960Abstract Chlorella vulgaris, Chlorella pyrenoidosa and Scenedesmus obliquus can be grown in 99.6% deuterium oxide media. The rate of growth of the deuterated organisms is great enough to make it possible to use them as a practical source of biosynthesized fully-deuterated compounds.

Stability of Procaine in Deuterium Oxide
Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences, 1964Stability of procaine in protium oxide and deuterium oxide was studied over the pH and "apparent" pH range 8 to 11. Studies were conducted at 40 and 100°.

Stabilization of Tubulin by Deuterium Oxide
Biochemistry, 1999Tubulin is an unstable protein when stored in solution and loses its ability to form microtubules rapidly. We have found that D2O stabilizes the protein against inactivation at both 4 and 37 degrees C. In H2O-based buffer, tubulin was completely inactivated after 40 h at 4 degrees C, but in buffer prepared in D2O, no activity was lost after 54 h ...

Reactions of 3,3-dimethylbut-1-ene with deuterium or deuterium oxide on oxide catalysts
Journal of the Chemical Society, Faraday Transactions 1: Physical Chemistry in Condensed Phases, 1976The reactions of 3,3-dimethylbut-1-ene (I) over a copper X zeolite, magnesium oxide and γ-alumina have been studied in the presence of either deuterium or deuterium oxide. Products obtained by exchange and/or isomerization have been analysed using a combined gas chromatograph-mass spectrometer.

The effects of deuterium oxide on bacteria
Zeitschrift fr Vererbungslehre, 1961The growth of several strains of bacteria was inhibited by D2O-media. The degree of inhibition was strain specific. The incorporation of 0.5% NaCl (w/v) to the D2O-medium decreased the inhibition of growth. No adaptation to better growth in deuterium was obtained in any of the strains tested; however a deuterium resistant mutant was obtained from one ...

A study of gramicidin using deuterium oxide
Biochimica et Biophysica Acta (BBA) - Biomembranes, 1979The single channel conductivity of the gramicidin channel has been measured for all the alkali ions using both H2O and 2H2O as a medium. Significant changes in conductivity with medium have been observed in all cases except lithium.

PRODUCTION OF GREEN ALGAE IN DEUTERIUM OXIDE
Canadian Journal of Microbiology, 1966The two species of green algae Scenedesmus obliquus and Chorella vulgaris were successfully adapted and grown in 99.7% deuterium oxide in 15-liter culture units. These units average 50 to 60 g of dry cells every 10 to 12 days. The deuterium oxide used in the media was recycled after purification to maintain usage at practical values.

Deuterium oxide effect on spermatogenesis in the mouse
Experimental Cell Research, 1968Drinking water containing 30 per cent D2O by volume was given to young adult S and C57 black mice. Quantitative histological study of the testes at weekly intervals indicated a progressive decline in number of spermatogonia to about 60 per cent of control by the end of the 7-week experimental period.
