Political Predation and Economic Development [PDF]

open access: yesSSRN Electronic Journal, 2005
We analyze a game between citizens and governments, whose type (benevolent or predatory) is unknown to the public. Opportunistic governments mix between predation and restraint. As long as restraint is observed, political expectations improve, people enter the modern sector, and the economy grows.

“Economizing” on Government in Economic Development

open access: yesAsian Economic Papers, 2006
The human resources and institutional capacity to deliver services through the public sector are scarce in developing countries with no traditions of an overarching state and in which the world's poor people are increasingly concentrated. This makes economizing on interventions by government a central aspect of economic development.

Exploring AAV‐Mediated Gene Therapy for Inner Ear Diseases: from Preclinical Success to Clinical Potential

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Current preclinical studies of AAV‐mediated gene therapy explore different strategies based on the characteristics of inner ear diseases. For genetic hearing loss, approaches include the replacement of a “good gene,” removal of a “bad gene,” or direct correction of mutations through base editing.

Solid State Defect Emitters With no Electrical Activity

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Point defects may introduce in‐gap states that alter electrical properties and lower the optical excitation threshold. It is thus widely assumed that solid‐state defect emitters alter the host conductivity. This study demonstrates, on a particular defect in 4H silicon carbide, that a yet unrecognized class of point defects exists that are optically ...

Stacking Interventions Enhances Carbon Removals and Profitability of Livestock Production Systems

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
The study indicates that stacking multiple interventions aimed at maximising soil organic carbon (SOC) sequestration and enteric methane (CH4) reductions realizes greater abatement and profit do any singular intervention, especially when SOC sequestration accounts for a significant proportion of greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) mitigation. Abstract While
