A Current Assessment of Software Development Effort Estimation

2011 International Symposium on Empirical Software Engineering and Measurement, 2011
In most cases, software projects exceed their estimated effort. It is often assumed that inaccurate estimates are the main reason for these overruns. Contrarily, our results show that this assumption is not reasonable in many cases. We conducted a survey to gather data on the current situation of software development effort estimation.

Neural Networks‐Based Software Development Effort Estimation: A Systematic Literature Review

J. Softw. Evol. Process.
Software development effort estimation (SDEE) is a key task in managing software projects. Among the existing SDEE models, artificial neural networks (ANN) have garnered considerable attention from the software engineering community because of their ...

Estimating the Effort in the Development of Distance Learning Paths

2014
The quantification of the effort required to produce e-learning material has been always subject to the proposal of some “magic numbers” not always supported by a method or analytical data. In this paper we propose a method for calculating the effort required to design and develop e-learning paths.

Dimensionality reduction in software development effort estimation

Journal of Systems and Software, 1993
Abstract During the last decade, an increasing number of researchers have attempted to address the problem of estimating software development effort. Recent empirical evaluations of the effort estimation models developed to date indicate two problems — model complexity and poor portability.

Engineering Effort Estimation for Product Development Projects

2019 IEEE International Conference on Industrial Engineering and Engineering Management (IEEM), 2019
Cost estimation is an essential process for gaining competitive advantage in the bidding phase of every project. Besides, cost estimates are also vital for effective project control. For product development projects engineering hours is the main cost item and hence estimating engineering hours for potential product development projects is an important ...

Estimating Software Development Effort Based on Phases

2014 40th EUROMICRO Conference on Software Engineering and Advanced Applications, 2014
Software development effort estimation is a very important issue in software engineering and several models have been defined to this end. In this paper, we carry out an empirical study on the estimation of software development effort broken down by phase, so that estimation can be used along the software development lifecycle.

Web development effort estimation using analogy

Proceedings 2000 Australian Software Engineering Conference, 2002
Although estimating the effort required in developing Web applications is a difficult task, accurate estimates of development effort have an important role to play in the successful management of Web development projects. In software development work to date, emphasis has focused on algorithmic cost models such as COCOMO and function points.

Early effort estimation in web application development

Journal of Systems and Software, 2015
Project planning in software industry represents one of the most complex tasks, especially when there is a need to estimate the time, cost and effort needed for development of software projects. In the field of development effort estimation for classical software projects a number of methods have been developed, tested and successfully implemented. Web

Estimating software development effort with connectionist models

Information and Software Technology, 1997
Abstract Accurate software development effort estimation is important for effective project management. Research studies indicate that effort estimation is a complex issue and results have in general not been encouraging. Artificial Neural Networks are recognised for their ability to provide good results when dealing with problems where there are ...

Decision Trees Based Software Development Effort Estimation: A Systematic Mapping Study

2019 International Conference of Computer Science and Renewable Energies (ICCSRE), 2019
The decision tree (DT) represents a nonparametric estimation method that has been mostly used for both classification and regression problems. DTs were adopted for software development effort estimation (SDEE) generally for their simplicity of use and ...
