During the Permian, quartzose sandstones were derived from erosion of the local Ross Orogen, likely from an uplifted swell in the area of today's Ross Sea, the Ross High.

Journal of Morphology, Volume 287, Issue 9, September 2026.Jaw muscle size, bite force, and skull strength are driven by multiple factors, not just the difference between the two habitats. Necturus produces higher bite forces than Salamandra, but the stress distribution is less even in Necturus, suggesting Salamandra's skull shape is better adapated to resist feeding loads.
