External structures at the nest‐site predict asymmetric architecture of nests in a mud‐building bird

open access: yesIbis, EarlyView.
In the animal kingdom, nests are essential structures and textbook examples of extended phenotypes. However, the relationship between builders, nest traits and the nest‐site remains poorly understood. We indirectly examine whether structures in the nest‐site influence nest‐building behaviour, specifically focusing on their effect on nest architecture ...

Dietary flexibility and high arthropod availability prevent food limitation in a mountain population of breeding Northern Wheatears

open access: yesIbis, EarlyView.
Mountain ecosystems are under strong environmental pressure and are considered highly vulnerable to climate change, which is likely to lead to forest expansion and loss of open alpine grasslands, threatening many specialized species. However, for most alpine birds, even basic ecological knowledge, such as their diet, remains limited, restricting our ...

Variation in forest area influences post‐fledging development and dispersal onset in the Eurasian Goshawk (Astur gentilis)

open access: yesIbis, EarlyView.
Natal dispersal is a key ecological process influencing gene flow, population connectivity and individual fitness. In altricial birds, the transition from fledging to natal dispersal is mediated by the post‐fledging dependence period, which is often difficult to observe in elusive, forest‐dwelling species.

A systematic review and meta‐analysis of variation in nest predation of ground‐nesting birds

open access: yesIbis, EarlyView.
Predation and communities of predators of ground‐nesting bird nests and fledglings have been studied across multiple groups of ground‐nesting birds, such as waders, waterbirds, gamebirds and passerines, and habitats, but differences and similarities between groups are less studied.

Distribution models of polysphinctine parasitoid wasps (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae) reveal sampling bias and flag potentially overlooked host interactions

open access: yesInsect Conservation and Diversity, EarlyView.
We quantified the geographical overlap between parasitoid wasps and their known host spiders. We could assess which parasitoid species have more limited information about their interactions and are subject to geographical survey bias. We generated sampling bias maps to assist other researchers in identifying where the main sampling gaps are.
