An experimental examination of dispersal decisions made by flight‐capable heteropteran insects in urban stormwater pond conditions

open access: yesEcological Entomology, EarlyView.
Salty conditions in urban stormwater ponds can influence dispersal timing in species‐specific ways for actively dispersing aquatic heteropteran insects. Assaying multiple aspects of dispersal propensity, Hesperocorixa obliqua emigrated earlier in stormwater pond conditions while overall probabilities remained unchanged; Notonecta undulata emigration ...

Nest boxes as microhabitats supporting diverse arthropod communities

open access: yesEcological Entomology, EarlyView.
Diverse Micro‐Habitats: Nest boxes supported 3634 arthropods from 82 families, highlighting their significant conservation value as artificial micro‐habitats for diverse invertebrate communities beyond their primary use for birds. Occupancy Boosts Diversity: Occupied nests exhibited significantly higher arthropod richness, abundance and Shannon ...

No evidence of a decoy effect in bees: Rewardless flowers do not increase bumblebees' preference for neighbouring flowers

open access: yesEcological Entomology, EarlyView.
Many plants retain nectarless flowers; we tested whether these act as “decoys” for bees by making neighbouring rewarding flowers seem more valuable—a cognitive bias known as the decoy effect. The presence of decoy flowers did not shift bumblebee preferences between two equally rewarding inflorescences, and bees quickly learned to avoid these nectarless

Nutritional composition of pollen stores in managed bees across European agro‐ecosystems reveals species‐specific differences but limited pesticide effects

open access: yesEcological Entomology, EarlyView.
In the pollen stores of three bee species deployed across 128 European sites, bumble bees harboured lower lipid content and higher protein‐to‐lipid ratios than honey bees and mason bees. Toxicity‐weighted pesticide risk did not alter protein‐to‐lipid ratios, but higher risk was associated with reduced protein and lipid content in the pollen stores of ...
