The transformation of a freshly deposited sediment into a rock is a complex process. Diagenesis is the name given to the many chemical and physical processes which act upon sediment grains in the subsurface. Halmyrolysis refers to the more restricted aspect of chemical changes operative at the sediment/water interface.
