Sputum induction (SI) is a sensitive and specific method for diagnosing Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia (PCP) in patients with AIDS. Although less expensive than bronchoscopy with bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL), SI followed by BAL does not necessarily ...

Prior to any surgical intervention, an adequate diagnostic workup is mandatory. This may be rather simple in many cases, but with the steadily growing surgical armamentarium, a broad range of diagnostic modalities is required to make the best use of the available therapeutic options. Physical examination is still the first step.

Rational Diagnostic Procedures
2000When treating a patient with acute abdominal pain, it is tempting to make extensive use of ancillary investigations. This leads to the emergence of “routines” in the emergency room (ER), by which every patient with acute abdominal pain undergoes a plain X-ray of the abdomen (AXR) and a series of blood tests, which typically include a complete blood ...

Abdominal ultrasound has recently been employed in the diagnosis of colonic ischaemia. The oedematous colonic wall is thickened and shows low level echoes. The lumen is narrowed. The results of this method are however non specific and allow no differentiation of changes caused by ischaemic colitis from these caused by inflammatory bowel diseases or ...

A thoracoscopic examination was performed in 41 patients under local anesthesia in the lateral decubitus Position. Prior thoracocentesis (38 patients) and blind biopsy with an Abrams' needle (32 patients) had been nondiagnostic. The initial nine patients

Summary The current movement towards ‘minimal’ staging may induce an unexpected movement, calling for ‘more intensive’ treatments. Indeed, some of the changes, such as the renunciation of the staging laparotomy and the lymphangiogram, make the final stage less secure and require reassuring treatments, i.e. more extensive radiotherapy or chemotherapy.

For many years radionuclide scanning (scintigraphy) has demonstrated its value as a sensitive screening procedure for the diagnosis of inflammatory disease. Various scanning agents have been used, ranging from Tc-99m-labeled phosphonates for 3-phase bone scanning to Tc-99-labeled nanocolloids and Ga-67 citrate for the nonspecific diagnosis of ...
