Breaking down automaticity: Case ambiguity and the shift to reflective approaches in clinical reasoning [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
Context: Two modes of case processing have been shown to underlie diagnostic judgements: analytical and non-analytical reasoning. An optimal form of clinical reasoning is suggested to combine both modes. Conditions leading doctors to shift from the usual

The MedSupport Multilevel Intervention to Enhance Support for Pediatric Medication Adherence: Development and Feasibility Testing

open access: yesPediatric Blood &Cancer, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Introduction We developed MedSupport, a multilevel medication adherence intervention designed to address root barriers to medication adherence. This study sought to explore the feasibility and acceptability of the MedSupport intervention strategies to support a future full‐scale randomized controlled trial.

Diagnostic error increases mortality and length of hospital stay in patients presenting through the emergency room [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Background: Diagnostic errors occur frequently, especially in the emergency room. Estimates about the consequences of diagnostic error vary widely and little is known about the factors predicting error.

Parent‐to‐Child Information Disclosure in Pediatric Oncology

open access: yesPediatric Blood &Cancer, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Background Despite professional consensus regarding the importance of open communication with pediatric cancer patients about their disease, actual practice patterns of disclosure are understudied. Extant literature suggests a significant proportion of children are not told about their diagnosis/prognosis, which is purported to negatively ...

Causal Signal Temporal Logic for the Environmental Control and Life Support System’s Fault Analysis and Explanation

open access: yesIEEE Access, 2023
Modern cyber-physical systems would often fall victim to unanticipated anomalies. Humans are still required in many operations to troubleshoot and respond to such anomalies, such those in future deep space habitats.

Prognostic Impact of Treatment Modalities, Including Targeted Compartmental Radio‐Immunotherapy, in a Cohort of Neuroblastoma Patients With CNS Metastases at Relapse

open access: yesPediatric Blood &Cancer, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Introduction Neuroblastoma (NB) with central nervous system (CNS) metastases is rare at diagnosis, but occurs more often during relapse/progression. Patients with CNS metastases face a dismal prognosis, with no standardized curative treatment available.

Pathogenic Germline PALB2 and RAD50 Variants in Patients With Relapsed Ewing Sarcoma

open access: yesPediatric Blood &Cancer, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Approximately 10% of patients with Ewing sarcoma (EwS) have pathogenic germline variants. Here, we report two cases: first, a novel germline pathogenic variant in partner and localizer of BRCA2 (PALB2) in a patient with a late EwS relapse. Its impact on homologous recombination is demonstrated, and breast cancer risk is discussed.

Differences in Diagnostic Reasoning of Expert and Novice Residents: Underlying Reasons and Suggestions for Improvements

open access: yesJournal of the Dow University of Health Sciences, 2020
With concerns related to patient safety gaining global precedence, diagnostic errors are speculated as an important cause of harm to the patients.Strong diagnostic skills indeed develop on grounds of sound knowledge and experience, however an ...

Virtual patients design and its effect on clinical reasoning and student experience : a protocol for a randomised factorial multi-centre study [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Background Virtual Patients (VPs) are web-based representations of realistic clinical cases. They are proposed as being an optimal method for teaching clinical reasoning skills. International standards exist which define precisely what constitutes a VP.
