Development of a multicentre cohort study to understand the role of MRI and ultrasound in the diagnosis of acute haematogenous bone and joint infection in children (the PIC Bone study): a study protocol

open access: yesBone & Joint Open
Aims: Bone and joint infections (BJI) in children are rare but can be serious. Differentiating BJI from other conditions with similar symptoms is critical. Advanced imaging (ultrasound scans (USS) and MRI) is often required to confirm the diagnosis. The

Transferrin receptor 1‐mediated iron uptake supports thermogenic activation in human cervical‐derived adipocytes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
In this study, we found that human cervical‐derived adipocytes maintain intracellular iron level by regulating the expression of iron transport‐related proteins during adrenergic stimulation. Melanotransferrin is predicted to interact with transferrin receptor 1 based on in silico analysis.

Biomarkers for diagnosis of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)

open access: yesBioingeniøren, 2016
Background: The diagnosis of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is based on typical symptoms after exclusion of other disorders. There is a strong need for a biomarker that confirms the diagnosis. The paper reviews available biomarkers for IBS.

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Difficulties and Correlation between Phenomenon and Reasoning Tier of Multiple-Choice Questions: A Survey Study

open access: yesIRJE (Indonesian Research Journal in Education), 2019
Two-tier multiple-choice (2TMC) has been introduced as an instrument to analyze a conceptual understanding at tier 1 and reasoning to the answer at tier 2. Even there are many studies on using the instrument; there is still relatively little attention on

Diagnostic accuracy of a low-cost, urine antigen, point-of-care screening assay for HIV-associated pulmonary tuberculosis before antiretroviral therapy: a descriptive study. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
BACKGROUND: The diagnostic accuracy of sputum smear microscopy and routine chest radiology for HIV-associated tuberculosis is poor, and culture-based diagnosis is slow, expensive, and is unavailable in most resource-limited settings.

Diagnostic tests for chancroid [PDF]

open access: yesSexually Transmitted Infections, 2000
The identification of the causative agent of chancroid, Haemophilus ducreyi , was first reported in 1889 by August Ducrey, as a short streptobacillary rod with rounded ends, following experiments in which he autoinoculated patients' forearms with pus from their genital ulcers.1 Bezancon et al subsequently inoculated the forearms of human volunteers ...

The ubiquitin ligase RNF115 is required for the clearance of damaged lysosomes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Upon lysosomal rupture, an E3 ubiquitin ligase RNF115 translocates from the cytosol to the damaged lysosomal membrane. Moreover, RNF115 depletion impairs the clearance of damaged lysosomes, identifying it as a key regulator of lysosomal quality control.
