Axial muscle‐fibre orientations in larval zebrafish

open access: yesJournal of Anatomy, Volume 246, Issue 4, Page 517-533, April 2025.
In 4 days post‐fertilization zebrafish larvae, the fast axial muscle fibres follow helical trajectories that taper towards the tail. Adjacent muscle fibres form substantial angles relative to each other to accommodate this pattern. Using a novel semi‐automatic method, we quantified 3D fibre angles over the whole muscle volume.

Relationship between carina size and sternum morphology in birds reflects physical constraints of body size and flight style

open access: yesJournal of Anatomy, EarlyView.
Sternum morphology varies among birds and is a function of body mass and order. The area of the sternum is inversely related to the area of the keel suggesting that the increase in bone mass associated with a large keel has been mitigated by a reduction in bone mass of the sternum.

The pectoralis muscle orientation as an indicator of the modes of wing‐propelled locomotion in birds

open access: yesJournal of Anatomy, EarlyView.
The pectoralis orientation of birds was consistent with the orientation of the aerodynamic force acting on the wing, varying by wing‐propelled locomotion (WPL) mode. The skeletal morphology unique to each WPL mode, related to the origin/insertion of the pectoralis, may be associated with these functional demands of pectoralis orientation.

The Relative Contributions of Arousal Presence and Arousal Intensity to Post‐Respiratory‐Event Ventilation in Obstructive Sleep Apnea

open access: yesJournal of Sleep Research, EarlyView.
In obstructive sleep apnea, the breathing after each obstructive event is affected by cortical arousal. Across two cohorts (N = 1781 and N = 67), arousal presence raised post‐event ventilation by 17–30%Eupnea, with each intensity step adding 1–4%Eupnea, independent of chemoreflex drive.
