A brightness illusion and transparency effects are described for configurations comprising alternating black and white bars on which are superimposed mid-luminance shapes (diamonds and hexagons). The resulting phenomena are predictable by Anderson's ‘scission theory’, which is thus given further support.

AbstractWe defend the thesis that every necessarily true proposition is always true. Since not every proposition that is always true is necessarily true, our thesis is at odds with theories of modality and time, such as those of Kit Fine and David Kaplan, which posit a fundamental symmetry between modal and tense operators.

Conflict Diamonds? Not Every Diamond Is a Blood Diamond
2009This chapter focuses on one of the hottest issues for the diamond industry: conflict (or ‘blood’) diamonds. The generations-old symbolic significance of a diamond as a stone of love and wealth suddenly began to change into a stone of war, misery, and hatred. Based on a theoretical approach to moral panic, analysed here in this chapter is the process of

A number of approaches for logical reasoning with diagrams have been proposed. This paper considers the question, how the expressiveness of such systems can be raised without losing the visual power of less expressive diagrams. The antagonism between expressiveness and diagrammatic simplicity is coped with by a set of jointly exhaustive and contrary ...
