Two distinct aphid diapause strategies: slow development or development arrest

open access: yesJournal of Insect Physiology, 2023
Aphids adapt to unfavourable environmental conditions, such as low temperatures in winter, by laying diapausing eggs that overwinter. Diapause is a stress-resistant and developmentally arrested stage that can be adopted in order to increase the chance of survival in adverse environmental conditions.

Drosophila americana Diapausing Females Show Features Typical of Young Flies. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2015
Diapause is a period of arrested development which is controlled physiologically, preprogrammed environmentally and characterized by metabolic depression that can occur during any stage of insect development.

Photoperiodic Response of Abrostola asclepiadis (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), a Candidate Biological Control Agent for Swallow-worts (Vincetoxicum, Apocynaceae) [PDF]

open access: yes, 2020
A biological control program is in development for two swallow-wort species (Vincetoxicum, Apocynaceae), European vines introduced into northeastern North America.

Juvenile Hormone Is an Important Factor in Regulating Aspongopus chinensis Dallas Diapause

open access: yesFrontiers in Physiology, 2022
Aspongopuschinensis is a Chinese traditional edible and medicinal insect, which is in great demand in the society. This insect reproduces once a year which is caused by reproductive diapause resulting in insufficient production in wild resources. However,

Circadian Clock Genes Regulate Temperature-Dependent Diapause Induction in Silkworm Bombyx mori

open access: yesFrontiers in Physiology, 2022
The bivoltine strain of the domestic silkworm, Bombyx mori, exhibits a facultative diapause phenotype that is determined by maternal environmental conditions during embryonic and larval development.

Diapause development in Aquarius paludum (Heteroptera: Gerridae) [PDF]

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Entomology, 2004
Diapause fixation and development were studied in females of a Czech population of Aquarius paludum by monitoring changes in oxygen uptake, weight and reproduction potential in field adults between August and February. The fall in oxygen uptake related to fresh weight (from > 1000 µl O2 per g per h to around 500 µl O2 per g per h) in field adults ...

Hormonal Regulation of Diapause and Development in Nematodes, Insects, and Fishes

open access: yesFrontiers in Ecology and Evolution, 2021
Diapause is a state of developmental arrest adopted in response to or in anticipation of environmental conditions that are unfavorable for growth. In many cases, diapause is facultative, such that animals may undergo either a diapause or a non-diapause ...

Ethyl formate diluted with nitrogen is an effective biosecurity treatment for brown marmorated stink bug (Halyomorpha halys). [PDF]

open access: yesPest Manag Sci
This research found that ethyl formate effectively controls adult brown marmorated stink bugs (Halyomorpha halys) regardless of dormancy state or temperature, at concentrations nine times lower than previous studies. Abstract BACKGROUND The brown marmorated stink bug (Halyomorpha halys) (BSMB) is a biosecurity threat globally. Its most likely avenue of

Embryonic diapause: development on hold

open access: yesThe International Journal of Developmental Biology, 2014
Embryonic diapause, the temporary suspension of development of the embryo, is a fascinating reproductive strategy that has been frequently exploited across the animal kingdom. It is characterized by an arrest in development that occurs at the blastocyst stage in over 130 species of mammals.

Photoperiodic control of the intensity of diapause and diapause development in the bean bug, Riptortus clavatus (Heteroptera: Alydidae)

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Entomology, 2000
Adult diapause in Riptortus clavatus (Thunberg) was induced by short-day photoperiods, and the critical daylength for its induction was 13.5 h. When insects were reared from eggs under diapause-inducing photoperiods near the critical daylength, the ...
