Exercise‐induced dynamic hyperinflation in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease

open access: yesExperimental Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is an inflammatory lung disease caused by inhalation of noxious particles, most commonly cigarette smoking. The consequent changes in airways, lung parenchyma and pulmonary vasculature lead to increased resistive, elastic and threshold loads and impaired capacity of the respiratory muscle pump. COPD

Women in space: A review of known physiological adaptations and health perspectives

open access: yesExperimental Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract Exposure to the spaceflight environment causes adaptations in most human physiological systems, many of which are thought to affect women differently from men. Since only 11.5% of astronauts worldwide have been female, these issues are largely understudied.

Comparison of Respiratory Muscle Electromyography between Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis and Healthy Subjects

open access: yesPhysical Treatments, 2014
Purpose: Scoliosis is one of the most common spinal deformities that affect chest wall mechanics. Scoliosis results in ventilator disorders and respiratory muscle weakness. However, the mechanism of these disorders is still unknown. The main objective of

Jumping on the moon as a potential exercise countermeasure

open access: yesExperimental Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract The Moon's gravitational field strength (17% Earth's gravity) may facilitate the use of bodyweight jumping as an exercise countermeasure against musculoskeletal and cardiovascular deconditioning in reduced gravity settings. The present study characterised the acute physiological and kinetic responses to bodyweight jumping in simulated Lunar ...

Sex differences in loop gain measured via superimposed end‐expiratory breath holds and inspired steady‐state hypoxia

open access: yesExperimental Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract Acute low oxygen exposure (hypoxia) elicits a hypoxic ventilatory response (HVR), which increases ventilation and mitigates hypoxaemia. During sustained exposure to hypoxia, ventilatory acclimatization increases peripheral chemoreflex (HVR) sensitivity or chemoreflex loop gain (LG).

Respiratory muscle endurance training among patients with chronic diseases: A systematic review of available evidence

open access: yesExperimental Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract This systematic review summarizes the available evidence on respiratory muscle endurance training involving voluntary isocapnic hyperpnoea among patients with chronic diseases. It includes both randomized and non‐randomized controlled trials implementing this exercise training modality performed either alone or in combination with other ...

Nitrite supplementation alleviates cerebrovascular dysfunction in chronically stressed mice, but cognitive decline remains

open access: yesExperimental Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract This study aimed to determine whether sodium nitrite supplementation prevented chronic stress‐induced cerebrovascular dysfunction and cognitive decline. We hypothesize that nitrite supplementation will prevent the oxidative environment and cerebrovascular dysfunction associated with chronic stress and maintain cognitive health.
