Accumulation of misfolded SOD1 outlines distinct patterns of motor neuron pathology and death during disease progression in a SOD1G93A mouse model of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis

open access: yesBrain Pathology, Volume 32, Issue 6, November 2022., 2022
On the basis of misfolded SOD1 (mfSOD1) accumulation, distinct motor neuron (MN) phenotypes were defined in association with vacuolar degeneration, starting at early presymptomatic stages. Giant mitochondrial vacuoles originate from an expansive growth of external mitochondrial membrane.

Feeding the City and Making the Revolution: Women and Urban Agriculture in Barcelona during the Spanish Civil War (1936–1939)

open access: yesAntipode, Volume 54, Issue 4, Page 1021-1042, July 2022., 2022

Phylogeography and ecological differentiation of strictly Mediterranean taxa: the case of the Iberian endemic Odontites recordonii

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Botany, Volume 109, Issue 1, Page 166-183, January 2022., 2022
Abstract Premise Ecological drivers for genetic differentiation in Mediterranean climates are still underexplored. We have used the strictly Mediterranean endemic Odontites recordonii as a model species to address this question. This species is one of the three Iberian representatives of the O. vernus group, which are morphologically similar.

Microglial recruitment and mechanisms involved in the disruption of afferent synaptic terminals on spinal cord motor neurons after acute peripheral nerve injury

open access: yesGlia, Volume 69, Issue 5, Page 1216-1240, May 2021., 2021
Main Points Early after axotomy, microglia recruited near injured motor neurons, emit processes that tend to contact their afferent synaptic terminals. Extracellular vesicles resulting from necroptotic synaptic disruption are removed by microglia. Abstract Peripheral nerve section with subsequent disconnection of motor neuron (MN) cell bodies from ...

Motoneuron deafferentation and gliosis occur in association with neuromuscular regressive changes during ageing in mice

open access: yesJournal of Cachexia, Sarcopenia and Muscle, Volume 11, Issue 6, Page 1628-1660, December 2020., 2020
Abstract Background The cellular mechanisms underlying the age‐associated loss of muscle mass and function (sarcopenia) are poorly understood, hampering the development of effective treatment strategies. Here, we performed a detailed characterization of age‐related pathophysiological changes in the mouse neuromuscular system.

Victims crossing overflowing watercourses with vehicles in Spain

open access: yesJournal of Flood Risk Management, Volume 13, Issue 4, December 2020., 2020
Abstract Heavy rainfall causes many watercourses to overflow. In these circumstances, crossing by car even on a road, can be extremely dangerous; however, dozens of drivers are swept away every year in their vehicles. This paper analyses this type of accident in Spain between 2008 and 2018, recording the date, location, number of victims, age and ...
