Detectability of Phytoplankton Biomass Extremes Using Simulated Satellite Chlorophyll Observations

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 4, 28 February 2026.
Abstract Extreme open‐ocean phytoplankton events can influence marine ecosystems, yet their global occurrence, drivers, and consequences remain poorly understood. Most large‐scale studies rely on satellite chlorophyll, which provides only a surface view, is affected by physiological variability, and is often missing due to clouds and low sunlight. Here,

Temperature Controls on Carbon‐Sulfur Diagenesis in Deep Hydrothermal Subseafloor Sediments

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 3, 16 February 2026.
Abstract Carbon mobilization and sulfur transformation play a significant role in deep carbon and sulfur cycling. However, sulfur biogeochemistry and its coupling with carbon and iron cycling remain poorly constrained in hydrothermal sediments. We investigated the effect of temperature on carbon‐sulfur‐iron diagenesis in subsurface sediments (≤370 m ...

On the Role of Western Boundary Currents to Fertilize Adjacent Continental Shelves at Interannual Scales: A Case Study in the Southwestern Atlantic

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 3, 16 February 2026.
Abstract Exchanges between continental shelves and open ocean basins regulate the transport of heat, salt, and nutrients. In the Southwestern Atlantic, the western boundary current known as the Malvinas Current (MC) fertilizes the outer shelf through recurrent slope‐water intrusions.

Chemical Information From the Ehrenfest Force Field Based on Reduced Density Matrix Functional Theory

open access: yesJournal of Computational Chemistry, Volume 47, Issue 5, 15 February 2026.
Reduced Density Matrix Functional Theory is evaluated as a practical route to approximate the exchange‐correlation contribution to the Ehrenfest force field. Across molecules from diatomics to polyatomics, it reproduces key bonding features and force‐field topologies while exposing limits in strongly correlated cases, enabling EhF analysis in larger ...

Anisotropic Shear Properties of Organic Interfaces in Bio‐composite Materials

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, Volume 36, Issue 12, 9 February 2026.
A novel cantilever design enables direct probing of shear properties at single organic interfaces within biocomposite prismatic ultrastructures. By decoupling lateral and torsional shear responses, the method reveals isotropic behavior in Atrina vexillum and pronounced anisotropy in Unio pictorum.
