Superhydrophobic Surfaces Engineered Using Diatomaceous Earth
ACS Applied Materials & Interfaces, 2013We present a simple method to prepare superhydrophobic surfaces using siliceous exoskeleton of diatoms, a widespread group of algae. This makes diatomaceous earth an accessible and cheap natural material. A micro/nanoscale hierarchical topography was achieved by coating a glass surface with diatomaceous earth, giving rise to a superhydrophilic surface.

2003AbstractA protocol for the evaluation of the efficacy of diatomaceous earth (DE) as grain protectant was developed. Four DE samples as admixture for wheat were evaluated against laboratory-reared cultures of 7- to 21-day-old unsexed adult Sitophilus oryzae (rice weevil; CSIRO strain 418) and Tribolium castaneum (red flour beetle; CSIRO strain 4).

Dijatomejska zemlja (DZ) je silicijska sedimentna stijena koju izgrađuju fosilizirani ostatci jednostaničnih biljnih organizama, dijatoma, srodnih algama. Fosilni ostatci (frustule) izgrađeni su gotovo potpuno od amorfnog silicijskog dioksida vrlo male i zanemarujuće otrovnosti za sisavce.
