Qualitative Analysis of Biogas by Raman Spectroscopy: Effect of Pressure on Major Components

open access: yesJournal of Raman Spectroscopy, EarlyView.
Raman spectra of major and selected minor biogas components were studied under pressures up to 100 bar. Pressure‐induced shifts and band broadening were quantified for methane, carbon dioxide, and nitrogen, while Raman spectra of ammonia and hydrogen sulfide are presented in the context of biogas quality monitoring.

Flow cytometric phytoplankton concentration and optical properties across instruments and laboratories

open access: yesLimnology and Oceanography: Methods, EarlyView.
Abstract Flow cytometry measures the optical properties of individual cells and has become essential for enumerating and characterizing marine phytoplankton. Yet systematic comparison of measurements across instruments remains limited, hampering data comparison across laboratories and long‐term time series.

Global Warming and Mass Extinctions Associated With Large Igneous Province Volcanism

open access: yesGeophysical Monograph Series, Page 83-102., 2021

Exploring the links between Large Igneous Provinces and dramatic environmental impact

An emerging consensus suggests that Large Igneous Provinces (LIPs) and Silicic LIPs (SLIPs) are a significant driver of dramatic global environmental and biological changes, including mass extinctions.

Determining diversity of benthic diatoms in the tidal flat using the environmental metabarcoding

open access: yes, 2017
Benthic diatoms are most dominant group in tidal flats and play major roles in maintaining ecosystem functions. In order to study the diversity and dynamics of benthic diatom communities, it should be available for identification and classification of ...

Speedy Diatoms

open access: yes, 2017
One of earth’s most important organisms are called diatoms. Responsible for 40% of ocean productivity, the main factor that limits growth is nutrient availability. Nutrients are quickly absorbed by all algae and competition is fierce.

Intercomparison of carbon‐13 and carbon‐14 tracer approaches for estimating marine calcification and net primary production

open access: yesLimnology and Oceanography: Methods, EarlyView.
Abstract Accurate measurements of phytoplankton net primary production (NPP) and calcification are essential for quantifying marine carbon cycling, yet in situ calcification rates remain poorly constrained. We compared 13C‐ and 14C‐based tracer methods for NPP in laboratory cultures of the diatom Chaetoceros tenuissimus and the coccolithophore ...

Is DNA metabarcoding an option for formaldehyde‐preserved zooplankton time series?

open access: yesLimnology and Oceanography: Methods, EarlyView.
Abstract The recovery of amplifiable DNA from formaldehyde‐fixed (FF) zooplankton samples has long been considered problematic, but advances in degraded‐DNA retrieval have renewed interest in FF samples. To access the information stored in long‐term zooplankton time series, we evaluated methods for extracting amplifiable DNA from community samples ...

Comparison of particle properties and biovolume estimates from FlowCam and microscopy for kettle hole phytoplankton communities

open access: yesLimnology and Oceanography: Methods, EarlyView.
Abstract The integration of high‐throughput image–based flow cytometry into routine phytoplankton assessment requires rigorous evaluation against established microscopy techniques. As method agreement is often site‐ and species‐specific, case‐by‐case validation is essential to successfully adopt emerging methods.

Stauroneis xuhuiensis sp. nov. (Bacillariophyta) from Guilin Park of Shanghai City, China

open access: yesNordic Journal of Botany, EarlyView.
A novel species, designated as Stauroneis xuhuiensis sp. nov., has been identified and described from Guilin Park in Shanghai City, China. Utilizing both LM and SEM, detailed observations were conducted to document the size, morphology, and ultrastructural features of this new species. S. xuhuiensis sp. nov. is characterized by linear‐lanceolate valves
