Polarized light imaging of birefringence and diattenuation at high resolution and high sensitivity [PDF]
Polarized light microscopy provides unique opportunities for analyzing the molecular order in man-made and natural materials, including biological structures inside living cells, tissues, and whole organisms. 20 years ago, the LC-PolScope was introduced as a modern version of the traditional polarizing microscope enhanced by liquid crystal devices for ...

A chiral microchip laser using anisotropic grating mirrors for single mode emission
Abstract A pair of nanostructured mirrors made of a diffraction grating inscribed in the top layer of a Bragg mirror are designed such that a phase shift near π and different reflected amplitudes exist between transverse electric (TE) and magnetic (TM) reflected polarization states at normal incidence.

Summary Tomographic diffraction microscopy (TDM) is a generalisation of digital holographic microscopy (DHM), for which the illumination angle onto the sample is fully controlled, which has become a tool of choice for 3D, high‐resolution imaging of unlabelled samples.

Chiral plasmonics fascinates researchers from diverse backgrounds. As the field matures, its transfer toward applications requires easy access to the underlying physics, guidance in proper optical characterization, as well as simple and large‐area methods to fabricate substrates. These issues are addressed with a brief introduction to chiral plasmonics

Single‐particle scattering spectroscopy: fundamentals and applications
Abstract Metallic nanoparticles supporting a localized surface plasmon resonance have emerged as promising platforms for nanoscopic labels, sensors, and (photo‐) catalysts. To use nanoparticles in these capacities, and to gain mechanistic insight into the reactivity of inherently heterogeneous nanoparticles, single‐particle characterization approaches ...

Modeling the Radiative Effect on Microphysics in Cirrus Clouds Against Satellite Observations
Abstract The radiative effect on microphysics (REM) plays an important role in the dew/frost formation near the surface. How REM impacts cirrus clouds is investigated in this study, using bin microphysical model simulations and coincident data of the CloudSat and Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) satellites.

Polarimetric Detection of Chemotherapy-Induced Cancer Cell Death
Imaging polarimetry is a focus of increasing interest in diagnostic medicine because of its non-destructive nature and its potential to distinguish normal from tumor tissue. However, handling and understanding polarimetric images is not an easy task, and

Full‐Range Optical Imaging of Planar Collagen Fiber Orientation Using Polarized Light Microscopy
A novel method for semiautomated assessment of directions of collagen fibers in soft tissues using histological image analysis is presented. It is based on multiple rotated images obtained via polarized light microscopy without any additional components, i.e., with just two polarizers being either perpendicular or nonperpendicular (rotated).
