Certain monoterpenes produced by aromatic plants are known to have lethal and sublethal effects on insects. As there is a need to replace conventional pesticides (organophosphates, carbamates, pyrethroids) with biorational pesticides, we evaluated the ...

The Dermaptera are a small order of insects, marked by reduced forewings, hindwings with a unique and complicated folding pattern, and by pincer-like cerci. Hindwing characters of 25 extant dermapteran species are documented.

Reproduction and Development of Blattella asahinai (Dictyoptera: Blattellidae) [PDF]
The development of the Asian cockroach, Blattella asahinai Mizukubo, was studied under laboratory conditions. Immature development and adult longevity were 67.8 and 103.5 d for females and 65.7 and 48.5 d for males. Females produced an average of 3.7 oothecae, 64.6% of which were viable.

A unique box in 28S rRNA is shared by the enigmatic insect order Zoraptera and Dictyoptera.
The position of the Zoraptera remains one of the most challenging and uncertain concerns in ordinal-level phylogenies of the insects. Zoraptera have been viewed as having a close relationship with five different groups of Polyneoptera, or as being allied

Understanding the origin and diversification of organisms requires a good phylogenetic estimate of their age and diversification rates. This estimate can be difficult to obtain when samples are limited and fossil records are disputed, as in Dictyoptera ...

Mulch Preferences of the Asian Cockroach (Dictyoptera: Blattellidae) [PDF]
Mulch preferences of the Asian cockroach, Blattella asahinai Mizukubo, were determined in a series of laboratory experiments. Because this species is a peridomestic pest, mulch preferences may be a key part of an integrated pest management program for homeowners. Five mulches were used: cypress, oak leaf litter, pine straw, rubber, and topsoil.

Carboniferous fossils enlighten the systematics and evolution of Hemiptera
Abstract Fossils are witnesses to the evolutionary processes undergone by living lineages. The earliest occurrence of clades provides rich insights into the timing of diversification of lineages and better delimits the groups that compose them. Hemiptera are a remarkable order within the insects due to their high morphological and ecological diversity.
