Położenie powstałej w 1075 r. diecezji płockiej generowało potrzebę jej zaangażowania w działalność misyjną. Jej granice stanowiły jednocześnie północno-wschodnie granice ówczesnego państwa polskiego. Było więc kwestią czasu, że pogańscy sąsiedzi diecezji mazowieckiej staną się adresatami aktywności misyjnej Kościoła płockiego.
