Lidar differential absorption and scattering technique: theory

Applied Optics, 1983
The results of theoretical investigations of the differential absorption technique for sounding atmospheric water vapor are described in this paper. The sources of errors and their effect on the results of interpreting the sounding data are analyzed. The mathematical problems for inverting the lidar returns are considered.

Ozone differential absorption lidar algorithm intercomparison

Applied Optics, 1999
An intercomparison of ozone differential absorption lidar algorithms was performed in 1996 within the framework of the Network for the Detection of Stratospheric Changes (NDSC) lidar working group. The objective of this research was mainly to test the differentiating techniques used by the various lidar teams involved in the NDSC for the calculation of

Coherent differential absorption lidar measurements of CO_2

Applied Optics, 2004
A differential absorption lidar has been built to measure CO2 concentration in the atmosphere. The transmitter is a pulsed single-frequency Ho:Tm:YLF laser at a 2.05-microm wavelength. A coherent heterodyne receiver was used to achieve sensitive detection, with the additional capability for wind profiling by a Doppler technique.

Differential absorption lidar sensing of ozone

Proceedings of the IEEE, 1989
The differential absorption lidar (DIAL) technique for deriving O/sub 3/ profiles from lidar measurements is discussed. The US National Aeronautics and Space Administration's airborne DIAL system is described, and examples of a broad range of O/sub 3/ and aerosol measurements are presented from a number of field experiments.

Differential absorption lidar signal averaging

Applied Optics, 1988
This paper presents experimental results using an atmospheric backscatter dual CO(2) laser differential absorption lidar (DIAL). It is shown that DIAL signals can be averaged to obtain an N(-(1/2)) dependence decrease in the standard deviation of the ratio of backscattered returns from two lasers, where N is the number of DIAL signals averaged, and ...

Water Vapor Differential Absorption Lidar

2021
Water vapor is one of the fundamental thermodynamic variables that define the state of the atmosphere. It is highly variable in space and time and influences many important processes related to weather and climate. For more than two decades the importance of water vapor profiling has been underscored by the research and operational weather communities.

Remote sensing of NO using a differential absorption lidar

Applied Optics, 1980
Single-ended remote sensing measurements of atmospheric NO have been made using differential absorption of frequency-doubled pulsed CO(2) laser radiation backscattered from topographic targets. Returns were obtained from targets at ranges out to 1.4 km, and significant NO concentrations above ambient were observed over a path which crossed a traffic ...

Continuous‐wave differential absorption lidar

Laser & Photonics Reviews, 2015
AbstractThis work proves the feasibility of a novel concept of differential absorption lidar based on the Scheimpflug principle. The range‐resolved atmospheric backscattering signal of a laser beam is retrieved by employing a tilted linear sensor with a Newtonian telescope, satisfying the Scheimpflug condition.
