Probing Air Pollutants by Differential Absorption LIDAR

1992
Air pollution is related with numerous different physical, chemical and meteorological phenomena. So, the atmospheric equilibrium depends on hundreds of chemical species, but only few of them are directly emitted and considered as main pollutants. All the others are trace constituents, being nevertheless of outstanding importance for the chemical ...

Differential Absorption Lidar Measurements of Atmospheric Species

Topical Meeting on Optical Techniques for Remote Probing of the Atmosphere, 1983
Interest in remote measurements of atmospheric gases has gained increased emphasis in recent years because of the need to assess the impact of man's activity on his environment. It has been recognized that knowledge of the sources, sinks, transport, and chemistry of atmospheric species must be obtained over large scales to understand the balance ...

Atmospheric tomography using differential absorption lidar

SPIE Proceedings, 1997
Differential Absorption Lidar measurements from a satellite platform are more complex and can yield more information than terrestrial DIAL measurements because of the significant Doppler shift associated with high satellite velocity relative to the atmosphere. This Doppler effect can be exploited as an extra degree of freedom in matching laser lines to

Differential Absorption LiDAR for NASA Ozone Mapping

Knowing how much and where ozone is in our atmosphere is important to daily life on Earth. Ozone present in the stratosphere is critical to protecting life from harmful radiation, but ozone in the troposphere is detrimental. NASA has created a network specifically tasked with measuring and mapping the ozone in the troposphere.

Detection and discrimination using multiple-wavelength differential absorption lidar

Applied Optics, 1985
A methodology is presented for generalizing two-wavelength single-material differential absorption lidar to multiple wavelengths for use in simultaneous multimaterial detection and discrimination. A key role in the analysis is played by the concentration path length (CL) product covariance matrix ΛĈL, which generalizes the CL variance.

Signal-induced fluorescence in photomultipliers in differential absorption lidar systems

Applied Optics, 1999
Signal-induced bias (SIB) superimposed on the tail of lidar signals detected by photomultiplier tubes (PMT's) has long been recognized as significant interference in lidar data retrieval. Analysis of the data from a lidar transmitting in the horizontal direction revealed that SIB is a well-shaped pulse and is thus called a signal-induced pulse (SIP ...
