The two-micron wavelength is suitable for monitoring atmospheric water vapor and carbon dioxide, the two most dominant greenhouse gases. Recent advances in 2-μm laser technology paved the way for constructing state-of-the-art lidar transmitters for ...

Abstract Water scarcity is a major threat to crop production and quality. Improving drought tolerance through variety selection requires a deeper understanding of plant ecophysiological responses, but large‐scale phenotyping remains a bottleneck. This study assessed the potential of high‐throughput tools (spectroscopy and poro‐fluorometry) to predict ...

Measurements of Water Vapor Profiles with Compact DIAL in the Tokyo Metropolitan Area
In recent years, the frequency of occurrence of locally heavy rainfall that can cause extensive damages, has been increasing in Japan. For early prediction of heavy rainfall, it is useful to measure the water vapor vertical distribution upwind cumulus ...

Atmospheric monitoring for the H.E.S.S. experiment using a single scattering lidar [PDF]
The High Energy Stereoscopic System (H.E.S.S.) is an array of 4 telescopes located in Namibia, which use the imaging atmospheric Cherenkov technique (IACT) to study astrophysical emission of gamma radiation in the energy window from 100 GeV to 50 TeV ...

Science Needs for a Terrestrial Biosphere Tipping Point Early Warning System
Abstract Tipping points in the Earth system have the potential to cause major detrimental impacts to the biosphere and societies. Their inherent nonlinearity implies that even relatively small additional increases in external forcing might result in disproportionately large adjustments to components of the Earth system.

Abstract Turbulence dissipation rate (EDR) governs the conversion of turbulent kinetic energy to heat and thereby controls vertical mixing, transport, and energy exchange in the convective boundary layer (CBL). The spatiotemporal structure of EDR remains poorly constrained, as observations are limited to point measurements or sparse vertical profiles ...

How Can the Latent Heat Entrainment Flux in the Convective Boundary Layer be Characterized?
Abstract A proposed theoretical description of the latent heat entrainment flux at the top of a convective boundary layer (CBL) was tested. It is related to the vertical velocity scale times the ratio of the water vapor mixing ratio (WVMR) gradient to the Brunt‐Väisälä frequency. This relation was tested with different LiDAR and radiosonde measurements.

Effects of Mineralogical Inhomogeneity on Aggregate Dust Optical Properties and Lidar Observables
Abstract Dust aerosols comprise irregular grains and aggregates with various mineralogical mixtures. However, most optical models use effective refractive indices to represent particles. This study develops an inhomogeneous aggregate model assigning mineral‐dependent refractive indices to constituent elements and representing global mineral volume ...
