Evaluating anisotropy‐based Monin–Obukhov similarity theory over canopies and complex terrain

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, EarlyView.
This study shows that an anisotropy‐based generalization of Monin–Obukhov surface‐layer scaling (SC23) applies readily across a wide range of atmospheric conditions with variable terrain, canopies, and land‐cover complexity. This work focuses on the scaling of velocity variances for 7 years at the 47 sites in the National Ecological Observation Network

Research on Synchronous Inversion Algorithm Based on Tri-Wavelength DIAL

open access: yesOptics
Traditionally, retrieving both temperature and CO2 concentration in atmospheric remote sensing has relied on two independent lidar systems, leading to increased system complexity and limited coordination.

Lidar Measurements of Ozone in the Upper Troposphere – Lower Stratosphere at Siberian Lidar Station in Tomsk

open access: yesEPJ Web of Conferences, 2016
The paper presents the results of DIAL measurements of the vertical ozone distribution at the Siberian lidar station. Sensing is performed according to the method of differential absorption and scattering at wavelength pair of 299/341 nm, which are ...

Scaling turbulence drives the general circulation

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, EarlyView.
The NOAA Gulfstream SP4, which deployed the GPS dropsondes over the NE Pacific Ocean as part of the Winter Storms Project during the January–March periods of 2004, 2005 and 2006. Abstract Statistical multifractal analysis of airborne and dropsonde observations is used to show that persistence of velocity after molecular collisions breaks the continuous

Remote sensing of methane emissions by combining optical similitude absorption spectroscopy (OSAS) and lidar

open access: yesEPJ Web of Conferences, 2018
Monitoring the emission of gases is difficult to achieve in industrial sites and in environments presenting poor infrastructures. Hence, robust methodologies should be developed and coupled to Lidar technology to allow remote sensing of gas emission ...

Scheimpflug-like processing of differential absorption lidar data on water vapor [PDF]

open access: yesEPJ Web of Conferences
Differential Absorption Lidar (DiAL) method is widely used for a number of ground-based and airborne greenhouse gas measurement applications. However, for a direct detection in the 2µm range, other sources of random noise can be neglected in front of the

Measuring Water Vapor with Differential Absorption Lidar

open access: yes, 2012
Despite the need for global measurements of water vapor profiles with low bias and high vertical resolution there is currently no operational remote sensing system that would deliver such data. A possible solution to this problem is offered by the differential absorption lidar (DIAL) approach. The basic principle of operation will be described and some

Increasing urban flash flood risk attributable to both climate and development

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, EarlyView.
A new event impact attribution methodology that combines convection‐permitting climate model data with flood inundation modelling was used for a five‐hour flash‐flooding event in the suburbs of Leeds in 2014. The results show increased urban flood extent due to both climate change (+16%) and increased urbanisation (+29%).

Development of wavelength locking circuit for 1.53 micron water vapor monitoring coherent differential absorption LIDAR

open access: yesEPJ Web of Conferences, 2018
We have studied a ground based coherent differential absorption LIDAR (DIAL) for vertical profiling of water vapor density using a 1.5μm laser wavelength. A coherent LIDAR has an advantage in daytime measurement compared with incoherent LIDAR because the

Characteristics of upper‐level updrafts and downdrafts in the anvils of tropical deep convective clouds

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, EarlyView.
This study investigates the thermodynamic and microphysical characteristics of updrafts and downdrafts of tropical deep convective anvil clouds using in situ measurements. We found that parts of the downdrafts are in ice supersaturation in these clouds.
