Biases and Uncertainties in Radiosonde‐Based Precipitable Water Vapor

open access: yesEarth and Space Science, Volume 13, Issue 9, September 2026.
Abstract Precipitable water vapor (PWV) plays an important role in weather and climate phenomena. Accurate PWV measurements based on radiosonde observations are essential for assessing remote‐sensing measurements and long‐term trends. This study examines the performance of PWV algorithms, including their intrinsic biases and their sensitivity to ...

Preemptive Entry and Technology Diffusion: The Market for Drive‐In Theaters

open access: yesThe RAND Journal of Economics, Volume 57, Issue 3, Page 471-494, Autumn (Fall) 2026.
ABSTRACT This article studies entry preemption in new industries. We first test a key prediction of dynamic entry games: Entry preemption is most relevant in intermediate‐sized markets, where firms face highest uncertainty about future entry. Using US drive‐in theater market (1945–1957) data, we find robust evidence for this non‐monotonic relationship ...

neonSoilFlux: An R package for continuous sensor‐based estimation of soil CO2 fluxes

open access: yesMethods in Ecology and Evolution, Volume 17, Issue 9, Page 2538-2550, September 2026.
Abstract Accurate quantification of soil carbon fluxes is essential to reduce uncertainty in estimates of the terrestrial carbon sink. However, these fluxes vary over time and across ecosystem types and so, it can be difficult to estimate them accurately across large scales.

Assessment and Correction of Non‐Linearity Effects for In Situ Rb‐Sr Geochronology Applied to High 87Rb/86Sr Mica

open access: yesGeostandards and Geoanalytical Research, Volume 50, Issue 3, Page 601-624, September 2026.
Key Points Measurement of 86Sr at count rates < 1500 cps can result in statistical bias. Non‐linear signals in analogue detection mode (e.g., Rb) present a challenge for accurately dating high 87Rb/86Sr mica (> 1000). Accounting for these considerations, high 87Rb/86Sr mica are dated here with accuracies of ∼ 1%.

Likelihood Estimation for Stochastic Differential Equations with Mixed Effects

open access: yesScandinavian Journal of Statistics, Volume 53, Issue 3, Page 1061-1080, September 2026.
ABSTRACT Stochastic differential equations provide a powerful tool for modelling dynamic phenomena affected by random noise. When time series are observed for several experimental units, it is often the case that some of the parameters vary between the individual experimental units.

Repelled Point Processes With Application to Numerical Integration

open access: yesScandinavian Journal of Statistics, Volume 53, Issue 3, Page 1101-1133, September 2026.
ABSTRACT We look at Monte Carlo numerical integration from a stochastic geometry point of view. While crude Monte Carlo estimators relate to linear statistics of a homogeneous Poisson point process (PPP), linear statistics of more regularly spread point processes can yield unbiased estimators with faster‐decaying variance, and thus lower integration ...
