Background: Difficult laryngoscopy (DL) is challenging when difficult ventilation occurs during standard laryngoscopy. For airway assessment, the common clinical airway predictors have low sensitivity (Sn) and specificity (Sp) with a limited predictive ...

Airway Ultrasound as Predictor of Difficult Direct Laryngoscopy: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis [PDF]
Background: Despite several clinical index tests that are currently applied for airway assessment, unpredicted difficult laryngoscopy may still represent a serious problem in anesthesia practice. The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to

Preoperative bedside test indicators as predictors of difficult video laryngoscopy in obese patients: a prospective observational study [PDF]
Purpose The aim of this study was to identify factors associated with difficult video laryngoscopy in obese patients. Methods A total of 579 obese patients undergoing elective laparoscopic weight loss surgery were intubated with a single-lumen ...

Background: Preoperative evaluation of anatomical landmarks and clinical factors helps to identify potentially difficultlaryngoscopies; however, its predictive reliability is unclear. As the ratio of height to thyromental distance (RHTMD) is a newer upper airwaypredictive test for difficult laryngoscopy, the predictive value and odds ratios of RHTMD ...

MANDIBULOHYOID DISTANCE IN DIFFICULT LARYNGOSCOPY
We studied radiographically 11 patients in whom direct laryngoscopy proved difficult and 100 control (general population) subjects. The vertical distance between the mandible and the hyoid bone (mandibulohyoid distance) was measured and the positions of the mandibular angle and hyoid bone determined in relation to the cervical vertebrae.

Experience with the McCoy laryngoscope in difficult laryngoscopy [PDF]
We report our experience with the McCoy levering laryngoscope in 48 patients who were a Cormack and Lehane grade 3 or grade 4 view at direct laryngoscopy. The view with the blade in neutral position was grade 3 in 39 patients and grade 4 in nine patients.

Application of ultrasonic measurement in evaluating difficult laryngoscopy exposure of OSAHS patients [PDF]
Objective To explore the feasibility of ultrasonic measurement of the skin to hyoid bone distance, skin to epiglottis distance and skin to anterior commissure of vocal cords distance for predicting difficult laryngoscopy exposure in obstructive sleep ...

Evaluation of Difficult Airway in Trauma Patients from Lateral Cervical Radiographs
Background: Many tests have been developed that are used either singly or in combination to identify a difficult airway. However, airway patency may not be adequately evaluated in some patients despite these tests.

Difficult Laryngoscopy and Diabetes Mellitus
The incidence of difficult laryngoscopy was determined retrospectively in 40 diabetic patients having pancreas transplantations and in 75 diabetic and 112 nondiabetic patients having kidney transplantations. Diabetes was associated with a significant increase in the proportion of patients having difficult laryngoscopies in patients having renal ...
