Analysing the significance of small conformational changes and low occupancy states in serial crystallographic data

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
This protocol paper outlines methods to establish the success of a time‐resolved serial crystallographic experiment, by means of statistical analysis of timepoint data in reciprocal space and models in real space. We show how to amplify the signal from excited states to visualise structural changes in successful experiments.

Optical schemes of spectrographs with a diffractive optical element in a converging beam [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of the European Optical Society-Rapid Publications, 2015
Optical schemes of spectrographs based on transmission concave holographic gratings working in converging beams are considered. General description of the design techniques are provided. Each of them is supported by a certain example with calculation and

Microstructural Evolution and Vacancy Defect Formation in Mn–Mo–Ni RPV Steel Under Low Cycle Fatigue: Insights From EBSD and PALS

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Low‐cycle fatigue damage in Mn–Mo–Ni reactor pressure vessel steel is examined using a combined electron backscatter diffraction and positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy approach. The study correlates texture evolution, dislocation substructure development, and vacancy‐type defect formation across uniform, necked, and fracture regions, providing

Super-Oscillating Diffractive Optical Spot Generators

open access: yesPhotonics
The prior discrete Fourier transform (PDFT) is applied to the design of super-oscillating diffractive optical elements with rotational symmetry. Numerical simulations of the filter response are used to demonstrate the potential of the PDFT-based approach,

Thermodynamic Pathways of Nonequilibrium Solidification in Wire‐Arc Additive Manufacturing Fe‐Based Multicomponent Alloy Structures

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Geometry‐driven thermal behavior in wire‐arc additive manufacturing (WAAM) influences microstructural evolution during nonequilibrium solidification of a chemically complex Fe–Cr–Nb–W–Mo–C nanocomposite system. By comparing different deposits configurations, distinct entropy–cooling rate correlations, segregation, and carbide evolution are revealed ...

Enhancing the Optical Efficiency of Near-Eye Displays with Liquid Crystal Optics

open access: yesCrystals, 2021
We demonstrate a light efficient virtual reality (VR) near-eye display (NED) design based on a directional display panel and a diffractive deflection film (DDF).

Thermomechanical Fatigue and Creep–Fatigue Interaction of Inconel 718 Additively Manufactured by Laser Beam Powder Bed Fusion

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Thermomechanical fatigue tests of laser beam powder bed fusion (PBF‐LB) Inconel 718 show that the additively manufactured material reaches almost the lifetimes of conventionally‐rolled material under no‐dwell conditions. Introducing dwell times at the maximum temperature markedly reduces the lifetimes due to pronounced grain boundary sliding associated

Multiplexed vortex beam-based optical tweezers generated with spiral phase mask

open access: yesiScience, 2023
Summary: The design and implementation of a multiplexed spiral phase mask in an experimental optical tweezers setup are presented. This diffractive optical element allows the generation of multiple concentric vortex beams with independent topological ...

Low‐Angle Grain Boundaries and Re‐Segregation in Single‐Crystalline Ni‐Base Superalloys

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This work demonstrates that Re‐segregation at low‐angle grain boundaries (LAGBs) in Ni‐base superalloys is influenced by misorientation angle. Advanced microscopy and atom probe tomography reveal that higher misorientation angles increases Re‐segregation.

Extreme Refractive-, Diffractive- and Hybrid-Hyperchromats: Minimizing the Equivalent Abbe Number of a Two-Lens System

open access: yesPhotonics, 2023
This work provides a comprehensive analysis of the maximum chromatic axial split of two-element hyperchromats, with the distance between the two lenses being a key variable.
