The retinal relaxing factor : update on an enigmatic regulator of the retinal circulation [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
The retinal circulation is regulated by different local factors and might include the retinal relaxing factor (RRF). This factor is found to be continuously released by the retina and relaxes smooth muscle cells.

Tailored Hierarchical Porous Copper Architectures via Three Dimensional Printing and Pressure‐less Sintering for Next‐Generation Lithium‐Metal Batteries

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
A hierarchical porous copper current collector is fabricated via three‐dimensional printing combined with pressureless sintering to stabilize lithium metal anodes. The interconnected architecture lowers local current density, guides uniform Li deposition within pores, and suppresses dendrite growth.

Inquiries into the Nature of Free Energy and Entropy in Respect to Biochemical Thermodynamics [PDF]

open access: yes, 2000
Free energy and entropy are examined in detail from the standpoint of classical thermodynamics. The approach is logically based on the fact that thermodynamic work is mediated by thermal energy through the tendency for nonthermal energy to convert ...

Investigation of Thermo‐Chemical Processes in Commercial MgO‐C Refractory Bricks With and Without MgO‐C Recyclate at Elevated Temperatures

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study investigates thermo‐chemical processes during high‐temperature testing of two commercial MgO‐C brick grades, one containing 47.5 wt.% MgO‐C recyclate. Using ETV, DTA/TG‐MS, XRD, and SEM/EDS/EBSD, mechanisms such as carbothermal reduction of magnesia, impurity incorporation into the secondary MgO surface layer, and calcium‐rich phase ...

Hydrogen desorption mechanism associated with ε carbide decomposition in martensitic medium-Mn steel

open access: yesJournal of Materials Research and Technology
Martensitic medium‐Mn steels have attracted significant attention for their excellent ultimate tensile strength, high ductility, and low austenitizing temperatures but remain susceptible to hydrogen embrittlement (HE).

Conformational Dynamics and Thermal Cones of C-terminal Tubulin Tails in Neuronal Microtubules [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
In this paper we present a model for estimation of the C-terminal tubulin tail (CTT) dynamics in cytoskeletal microtubules of nerve cells. We show that the screened Coulomb interaction between a target CTT and the negatively charged microtubule surface ...

Novel Tailoring of Ternary ZnS‐MXene‐TiO2 Nanocomposite Heterojunction and Its Tunable Electrochemical Properties With Enhanced Photocatalytic Degradation

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
ZnS‐MXene‐TiO2 nanocomposite heterojunction for photocatalytic decomposition of this methylene blue dye (MB) greatly improves light absorption, charge separation, and active site area. Two‐dimensional MXene forms nanocomposites by easily combining them with 0D (quantum dots), 1D (tube and wire), 2D (plane and sheet), and 3D (particle and lamellar ...

Temperature-driven mechanisms of hydrogen embrittlement and electrochemical corrosion in Ni-based superalloy 600

open access: yesJournal of Materials Research and Technology
The temperature-dependent mechanisms for hydrogen-induced embrittlement and electrochemical corrosion in Ni-based superalloy 600 have been unravelled by means of tensile tests and potentiodynamic polarization tests under electrochemical environment ...

Removing Oxide Layers and Retaining Oxide‐Free Steel Surfaces by Polishing in Oxygen‐Free Atmosphere

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
In this study, the efficacy of wet mechanical polishing under an oxygen‐free atmosphere for deoxidation and the retention of an oxide‐free steel surface are elucidated using X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The methodology proved successful; however, the results were highly dependent on the preparation of the solvents used to clean the samples after ...

Investigating the Fatigue Response of Cathodically Charged Cold-Finished Mild Steel to Varied Hydrogen Concentrations

open access: yesCorrosion and Materials Degradation
This study investigates the fatigue behavior of cold-finished mild steel subjected to electrochemical hydrogen charging under controlled conditions. Samples were subjected to hydrogen charging at constant time in a fixed electrolyte pH, after which the ...
