Observations of quiet-time moderate midlatitude L-band scintillation in association with plasma bubbles [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Observations of moderate night time amplitude scintillation on the GPS L1C/A signal were recorded at the midlatitude station of Nicosia, corresponding geographic latitude and longitude of 35.18˚N and 33.38˚E respectively, on a geomagnetically quiet day ...

Diurnal, seasonal, annual, and semi-annual variations of ionospheric parameters at different latitudes in East Asian sector during ascending phase of solar activity

open access: yesSolar-Terrestrial Physics, 2017
We analyzed ionospheric parameters including the critical frequency of the F2 layer (foF2), the peak height of the F2 layer (hmF2), and the scale height at hmF2 (HT) from 2006 to 2012 (ascending phase of solar activity) at Hainan (19.5° N, 109.1° E, MLat.

Generation of Artificial Acoustic-Gravity Waves and Traveling Ionospheric Disturbances in HF Heating Experiments [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
We report the results of our ionospheric HF heating experiments to generate artificial acoustic-gravity waves (AGW) and traveling ionospheric disturbances (TID), which were conducted at the High-frequency Active Auroral Research Program facility in ...

Case Studies on the Day‐to‐Day Variability in the Occurrence of Post‐Sunset Equatorial Spread F

open access: yesSpace Weather, 2022
The occurrence of post‐sunset equatorial spread F (ESF) is well understood to be associated with the evening pre‐reversal enhancement (PRE). Earlier studies have shown that when large datasets are examined, there is a significant correlation between the ...

Dataset of Quiet Space Weather Periods for Ionospheric Studies

open access: yesEarth and Space Science, Volume 13, Issue 4, April 2026.
Abstract The ionosphere is a dynamic environment regularly affected from above and from below. This study identifies periods within the years 2000–2023 when the impact from above, driven by space weather, was minimal. The quiet space weather periods have wide usage for two types of ionospheric studies. At first, studies of isolated space weather events

An analysis of automatically scaled F1 layer data over Grahamstown, South Africa [PDF]

open access: yes, 2004
This paper describes an analysis of automatically scaled F1 layer data over Grahamstown, South Africa (33.3°S, 26.5°E). An application for real time raytracing through the South African ionosphere was identified, and for this application real time ...

Unraveling Super Equatorial Plasma Bubbles (EPBs) Evolution During the 23 April 2023 Storm: Multi‐Instrument Observations and GITM‐SAMI3 Simulation

open access: yesSpace Weather, Volume 24, Issue 4, April 2026.
Abstract Storm‐time equatorial plasma bubble (EPB) dynamics play a critical role in space weather impacts on communication and navigation systems, yet the mechanisms governing their formation and evolution under storm conditions remain poorly understood.

Rapid Evolution of Super Equatorial Plasma Bubbles and X‐Pattern EIA Formation During Extreme Storm Conditions on 12 November 2025

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 6, 28 March 2026.
Abstract Extreme conditions during storms profoundly alter the evolution of equatorial plasma bubbles (EPBs), yet the key dynamics remains poorly understood. We document the rapid expansion, contraction, and decay of super EPBs in South America during the 12 November 2025 storm with Interplanetary Magnetic Field (IMF) Bz/By magnitude exceeding ∼50 nT ...

Ground-based measurements of ionospheric dynamics

open access: yesJournal of Space Weather and Space Climate, 2018
Different methods are used to research and monitor the ionospheric dynamics using ground measurements: Digisonde Drift Measurements (DDM) and Continuous Doppler Sounding (CDS).

The Evolution of a Polar Cap Patch Into a Blob in the Nightside Ionosphere: Direct Observations of Multiple Blob Formation Mechanisms Acting Simultaneously on the Same Plasma

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Space Physics, Volume 131, Issue 3, March 2026.
Abstract A polar cap patch was observed to exit the polar cap to become a blob as it entered the auroral oval on the nightside of the Earth under moderately quiet geomagnetic conditions (Kp = 3−). Auroral particle precipitation led to an increase in the electron density of the blob.
