Review of the evidence on the use of arbitration or consensus within breast screening:A systematic scoping review [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
ObjectivesA systematic scoping review was undertaken to establish the evidence base on arbitration and consensus in mammography reporting.Database searches were supplemented with hand searching of peer-reviewed journals, citation tracking, key author ...

Radiation Risk in 2D Mammography Screening: A Scoping Review of Modelling Strategies and Emerging AI Applications

open access: yesJournal of Medical Radiation Sciences, Volume 73, Issue 1, Page 7-18, March 2026.
This scoping review examined models estimating long‐term radiation risks from repeated mammography screening. While modelling indicates the risks are low, approaches vary by protocol and vendor. Emerging AI tools show promise for improving personalised risk estimation, though further development is needed for cross‐platform compatibility.

The added benefit of digital breast tomosynthesis in second breast cancer detection among treated breast cancer patients

open access: yesThe Egyptian Journal of Radiology and Nuclear Medicine, 2018
Objectives: We aimed to compare the recall rate (RR) and the cancer detection rate (CDR) of combined full field digital mammography and digital breast tomosynthesis (FFDM + DBT) to those of full field digital mammography (FFDM) alone in breast cancer ...

Channelized hotelling observers for signal detection in stack-mode reading of volumetric images on medical displays with slow response time [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
Volumetric medical images are commonly read in stack-browsing mode. However, previous studies suggest that slow temporal response of medical liquid crystal displays may degrade the diagnostic accuracy (lesion detectability) at browsing rates as low as 10

An Analysis of Acquisition Dose in Male Mammography

open access: yesJournal of Medical Radiation Sciences, Volume 73, Issue 1, Page 52-59, March 2026.
This retrospective study analysed 266 male breast imaging acquisitions across two Australian hospital sites, comparing radiation doses from full‐field digital mammography (FFDM) and digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT). DBT doses were significantly higher than FFDM, while FFDM glandular doses were lower than previously reported male and female cohorts ...

Digital Breast Tomosynthesis: Clinical Operations

open access: yesJournal of Breast Imaging, 2019
Abstract Digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT) is rapidly becoming the standard of care for breast cancer screening. Implementing DBT into practice is relatively straightforward. However, there are important elements of the transition that one must consider to facilitate this process.

Synthesizing mammogram from digital breast tomosynthesis [PDF]

open access: yesPhysics in Medicine & Biology, 2019
The purpose of this study is to develop a new method for generating synthesized mammogram (SM) from digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT) and to assess its potential as an adjunct to DBT. We first applied multiscale bilateral filtering to the reconstructed DBT slices to enhance the high-frequency features and reduce noise.

Diagnostic value of digital breast tomosynthesis in suspicious lesions detected in screening mammogram

open access: yesThe Egyptian Journal of Radiology and Nuclear Medicine
Background Digital mammography (DM) serves as the primary breast imaging technique for early cancer detection and diagnosis. However, it faces certain limitations, particularly in imaging dense breasts.

Radiation exposure and screening yield by digital breast tomosynthesis compared to mammography: results of the TOSYMA Trial breast density related

open access: yesEuropean Radiology
The randomized TOmosynthesis plus SYnthesized MAmmography (TOSYMA) screening trial has shown that digital breast tomosynthesis plus synthesized mammography (DBT + SM) is superior to digital mammography (DM) in invasive breast cancer detection varying ...
