Mapping the ecological resilience of Atlantic postglacial heathlands. [PDF]

open access: yesJ Appl Ecol, 2022
The map predicting the ecological resilience of Atlantic postglacial heaths can be used by managers working towards heath preservation and restoration to prioritize conservation efforts and to plan management practices across Atlantic Northern Europe.

Wherever I may roam—Human activity alters movements of red deer (Cervus elaphus) and elk (Cervus canadensis) across two continents

open access: yesGlobal Change Biology, Volume 29, Issue 20, Page 5788-5801, October 2023., 2023
Understanding changes in movement patterns of wide‐ranging animals and responses to globally increasing human pressure are a key aspect in their conservation. Along a steep gradient of human activity (a), we compared movement characteristics of red deer and elk (b) from 28 populations on two continents (c).

Top‐down control of a marine mesopredator: Increase in native white‐tailed eagles accelerates the extinction of an endangered seabird population

open access: yesJournal of Applied Ecology, Volume 60, Issue 3, Page 445-452, March 2023., 2023
Our study shows that top‐down effects from avian predators can be significant regulators of seabird populations, challenging their conservation where native, often protected, predators are rising. Such effects, and their possible interaction with other factors, must also be accounted for when using seabird demographic traits as environmental indicators

Pathways of introduction of alien species in Norway: Analyses of an exhaustive dataset to prioritise management efforts

open access: yesJournal of Applied Ecology, Volume 59, Issue 12, Page 2959-2970, December 2022., 2022
Introductions of new alien species cannot be prevented by closing one or two introduction pathways, since none can be singled out as the main pathway of high‐impact alien species. Yet each pathways closed makes a difference, as this reduces the overall introduction pressure.

Spatial distribution of biodiversity citizen science in a natural area depends on area accessibility and differs from other recreational area use

open access: yesEcological Solutions and Evidence, Volume 3, Issue 4, October–December 2022., 2022
Citizen science connects people with places they care about and is a major contributor to biodiversity science and conservation. Still, biodiversity data from opportunistic citizen science platforms could play a bigger role in the management of small, recreationally popular protected and natural areas.

Salmon louse infestation levels on sea trout can be predicted from a hydrodynamic lice dispersal model

open access: yesJournal of Applied Ecology, Volume 59, Issue 3, Page 704-714, March 2022., 2022
Wild sea trout, spending its entire feeding migration in fjords and coastal areas, is at higher risk than wild Atlantic salmon to lice infestations from industrial salmon farming. The high levels of lice infestation we observed on sea trout question the environmental sustainability of the current aquaculture industry in areas with intensive farming. We
