The Digital Markets Act: Regulating the Wild West

This contribution critically assesses the European Union’s Digital Markets Act (DMA). The DMA is the first comprehensive legal regime to regulate digital gatekeepers with the aim of making platform markets fairer and more contestable. To this end, the DMA establishes 22 per se conduct rules for designated platforms.

Compliance principles for the Digital Markets Act

Under the European Union's Digital Markets Act (DMA), six 'gatekeepers' (Alphabet, Amazon, Apple, ByteDance, Meta and Microsoft) have been designated in relation to 22 core platform services (CPS). The gatekeepers have until 6 March 2024 to propose to the European Commission how they will comply with their DMA obligations.
