What Makes a Branched Aromatic Compound a Crystallization Chaperone? Insights from a Comparison of Three Organic Scaffolds

open access: yesChemistry – A European Journal, EarlyView.
The ability to accommodate guest molecules of many different shapes in crystal lattices has been tested for teraaryl derivatives of porphyrin, spirobifluorene, and adamantane. The latter appears to offer the most favorable properties, which may be at least partially due to low activation barriers for the interconversion of rotamers.

Synthesis of Anthraquinone Mono‐ and Diboron Complexes with Near‐Infrared Panchromatic Absorption

open access: yesChemistry – A European Journal, EarlyView.
Anthraquinone boron complexes bearing β‐iminoenolate ligand(s) exhibit strongly substituent‐dependent absorption properties. Unsubstituted monoboron and diboron complexes show sharp UV–Vis–NIR absorption spectra resulting from increased molecular rigidity induced by boron coordination.

Alternating Orthogonal Switching in a Thiophenyl‐Phenyl‐Bis‐Azobenzene Switch

open access: yesChemistry – A European Journal, EarlyView.
This study employs computational calculations and ultrafast spectroscopy to design and probe alternate isomerization in a bis‐azobenzene molecule. The phenyl‐ and thiophenylazobenzene moieties exhibit independent switching under different wavelengths, advancing multi‐photoswitch applications.

Soluble Ring‐Unsubstituted Phthalocyanine Zirconium(IV) and Niobium(V) cis‐Alkoxides and Their Catalytic Activity Toward the Ring‐Opening Polymerization of rac‐Lactide

open access: yesChemistry – A European Journal, EarlyView.
Ring‐unsubstituted phthalocyanine chloride complexes of Zr(IV) and Nb(V) are solubilized via conversion to a range of cis‐axially ligated alkoxides, which show varying levels of activity as lactide polymerization catalysts depending on the alkoxide and the metal center.

4‐Dimethylamino‐1,8‐Naphthalimide as a Fluorescence Signal Amplification for Site Selective and in Situ Probing of the Hydroxyl Radical

open access: yesChemistry – A European Journal, EarlyView.
4‐dimethylamino‐1,8‐naphthalimide (NMI) as new fluorescence‐responsive tool for HO• detection. Proof of concept illustrating that NMI selectively probes HO• produced by Cu‐bound to Aβ16 in presence of scavengers with an amplified response. Abstract Overproduction of reactive oxygen species (ROS) is involved in several diseases.

Cytotoxicity of Atropisomeric [1,1′‐Binaphthalene]‐2,2′‐Diamines (BINAM) and Analogs in Human Cancer Cells: Enantioselectivity, Structure–Activity Relationships, and Mechanism

open access: yesChemMedChem, EarlyView.
It is reported for the first time that atropisomeric (R)‐[1,1′‐binaphthalene]‐2,2′‐diamine (R‐BINAM, 1(R)), but not (S)‐[1,1′‐binaphthalene]‐2,2′‐diamine (S‐BINAM, 1(S)), is a moderately potent spindle poison, causing antiproliferation, depolymerization of microtubules, multipolar spindles, pericentriolar material (PCM) fragmentation, mitotic ...
