DIII-D Diagnostic Systems [PDF]
The DIII-D tokamak, located at General Atomics in San Diego, California, has long been recognized as being one of the best diagnosed magnetic fusion experiments. Composed of more than 50 individual systems, the diagnostic set takes advantage of a high number of large-aperture access ports.

Carbonization of the DIII-D tokamak [PDF]
The DIII-D tokamak has been carbonized by the application of a carbon film covering all plasma facing surfaces. Carbonization was done in order to reduce the metal impurity influx and central metal accumulation especially during beam heated D{sup O} {yields} D{sup +} H-mode discharges.

Simultaneous stabilization and control of the n = 1 and n = 2 resistive wall mode
DIII-D experiments demonstrate simultaneous stability measurements and control of resistive wall modes (RWMs) with toroidal mode numbers n = 1 and n = 2.

Modeling of ExB effects on tungsten re-deposition and transport in the DIII-D divertor
Mixed-material DIVIMP–WallDYN modeling, now incorporating ExB drifts, is presented that simultaneously reproduces tungsten (W) erosion and deposition patterns observed during the DIII-D metal rings campaign, in which a toroidally symmetric set of W ...

Restoration of the DIII-D solenoid [PDF]
The DIII-D tokamak has been operated since June 1995 with constrained ohmic heating capability as imposed by the abandonment of half of it`s solenoid system due to a cooling water leak. The solenoid is comprised of A and B windings with separate multiple power leads to each. The cooling water leak occurred in the lead of the B winding.

A newly developed plasma response model, combining the nonlinear two-fluid MHD code TM1 and toroidal MHD code GPEC run in ideal mode, quantitatively predicts the narrow isolated q95 windows (Δq95 ∼ 0.1) of edge-localized mode (ELM) suppression by n = 1 ...

Development and experimental qualification of novel disruption prevention techniques on DIII-D
Novel disruption prevention solutions spanning a range of control regimes are being developed and tested on DIII-D to enable ITER success. First, a new real-time control algorithm has been developed and tested for regulating nearness to stability limits ...
