Sexual Dimorphism in the Liver
Annual Review of Physiology, 1983That the liver in oviparous females supplies the major part of the egg yolk proteins requires a marked degree of sexual dimorphism of this organ. In addition to vitellogenin, several minor components (e.g. vitamin binding proteins) are supplied by the liver to the oocyte in oviparous animals and to the developing embryo in viviparous females.

[Dimorphic fungi: biochemical approach to their dimorphism].
Acta cientifica venezolana, 1998Dimorphism in pathogenic fungi is reviewed. The phenomenon is divided into four interwoven events: (a) perception of external stimuli by cellular sensors; (b) translation into a biochemical message; (c) alteration of the genomic expression, and (d) structural reorganization towards the morphological change. Experimental evidence is provided.

Summary1. Life expectancy and mortality rates from diseases arising in various organs vary with sex because of differential exposure to external hazards and because of essential differences between males and females in aspects not directly connected with reproduction.

Sex differences in behavior are the result of natural and sexual selection. The dimorphic classes of behavior described here, courtship, copulatory, and parental behaviors, reflect both kinds of evolutionary selective pressures. We can further distinguish two kinds of mechanisms that produce differences in male and female behaviors. In one, both sexes

Stroke is a leading cause of death and serious, long-term disability. Studies evaluating differences between men and women are lacking. Significant differences exist between men and women in terms of risk factors and susceptibility to stroke. Women are less likely to have diagnostic studies performed to evaluate their risk for stroke, and they have a ...
