Occurrence of harmful algal species and shellfish toxicity in Sardinia (Italy)

open access: yesItalian Journal of Food Safety, 2016
Sardinia (Italy, north-western Mediterranean) is a commercially important producer of edible bivalve molluscs. Since the early 2000s, it was subjected to recurring cases of mussel farm closures due to toxic algal poison.

Photoregulation in a Kleptochloroplastidic Dinoflagellate, Dinophysis acuta

open access: yesFrontiers in Microbiology, 2016
Some phagotrophic organisms can retain chloroplasts of their photosynthetic prey as so-called kleptochloroplasts and maintain their function for shorter or longer periods of time.

Distribution Characteristics and Environmental Control Factors of Lipophilic Marine Algal Toxins in Changjiang Estuary and the Adjacent East China Sea

open access: yesToxins, 2019
Marine algal toxins, highly toxic secondary metabolites, have significant influences on coastal ecosystem health and mariculture safety. The occurrence and environmental control factors of lipophilic marine algal toxins (LMATs) in the surface seawater of

Persistent Contamination of Octopuses and Mussels with Lipophilic Shellfish Toxins during Spring Dinophysis Blooms in a Subtropical Estuary

open access: yesMarine Drugs, 2015
This study investigates the occurrence of diarrhetic shellfish toxins (DSTs) and their producing phytoplankton species in southern Brazil, as well as the potential for toxin accumulation in co-occurring mussels (Perna perna) and octopuses (Octopus ...

Probabilistic models for harmful algae: application to the Norwegian coast

open access: yesEnvironmental Data Science
We have developed probabilistic models to estimate the likelihood of harmful algae presence and outbreaks along the Norwegian coast, which can help optimization of the national monitoring program and the planning of mitigation actions.

Accumulation and Biotransformation of Dinophysis Toxins by the Surf Clam Mesodesma donacium

open access: yesToxins, 2018
Surf clams, Mesodesma donacium, were shown to accumulate toxins from Dinophysis acuminata blooms. Only pectenotoxin 2 (PTX2) and some of its derivatives were found, and no toxins from the okadaic acid group were detected.

Spatio-temporal distribution of dinoflagellate Dinophysis fortii, producer of lipophilic toxins in Todos Santos Bay, Baja California, México.

open access: yes, 2016
La presencia de toxinas lipofílicas en moluscos bivalvos es uno de los problemas más importantes relacionados con intoxicaciones y perdidas económicas asociadas a florecimientos algales nocivos a nivel mundial debido a la amplia distribución geográfica ...
