The capability to produce pearls is widespread in the phylum Mollusca, including bivalves of the superfamily Unionoidea. Here, we identified and characterized natural pearls formed by Diplodon chilensis, a freshwater clam native to southern South America,

No obstante,

QUANTITATIVE KARYOTYPE OF DIPLODON CHILENSIS (GRAY 1828) (BIVALVIA:HYRIIDAE)
The karyotype of a freshwater population of Diplodon chilensis located in La Poza area of the Villarrica Lake (39o18'S; 72o05'W), Southern Chile, was studied. The chromosomes were obtained by squash of cleaving embryos, previously treated with colchicine and fixed in ethanol-acetic acid 3:1 at 4oC and stained using the Feulgen reaction.

Does shell shape variation play a role in conservation of the long‐lived freshwater bivalve Diplodon chilensis (Bivalvia, Hyriidae)? [PDF]
Freshwater bivalves of the order Unionoida display an uncommon phenotypic plasticity with high interpopulation and intrapopulation morphological variability, which could be advantageous for coping with habitat modifications.

Relocation as a tool for biodiversity, conservation and management. Lessons from Diplodon Chilensis (GRAY 1828) (BIVALVIA, HYRIIDAE) [PDF]

Manganese speciation inDiplodon chilensis patagonicusshells: a XANES study
X-ray absorption near-edge spectroscopy (XANES) at the Mn K-edge was used to investigate the environment of Mn in situ within the growth increments of the long-lived freshwater bivalve species Diplodon chilensis patagonicus. Single XANES spectra and Mn Kalpha fluorescence distributions were acquired at submillimetre resolution (up to 100 microm x 50 ...
