Alaria nasuae (Trematoda: Diplostomidae) from Domestic Dogs

Two stray dogs were found naturally infected with adult Alaria nasuae in Tamaulipas, Mexico. This is the first report of this species from a domestic dog, the first report of it from Mexico, and the first time the species has been recorded since its original description.

Snails, Physa halei Lea, from Madison County, East Texas, shed strigeid cercariae in large numbers. Adult Posthodiplostomum minimum (MacCallum, 1921) Dubois, 1936, were recovered from chicks force-fed metacercariae obtained from both natural and experimental infections of fishes.

Sphincterodiplostomum musculosum Dubois, 1936 (Diplostomidae, Diplostominae) was originally described on the basis of specimens collected from the intestine of agami heron, Agamia agami (Gmelin) (Ardeidae), in Mato Grosso, Brazil. The original description of this species was brief because it was based on a few immature specimens.

Chromosomal complements of Posthodiplostomum cuticola and P. brevicaudatum were studied using the air-drying technique and Giemsa staining. The diploid chromosome number for these species was 2n =20. The structure of karyotype of P. cuticola was: lst-5thA + 6th- 8th ST-SM + 9th SM + 10th SM-M.

A systematic analysis of the genera in the Diplostomidae and Strigeidae was made using the Proterodiplostomidae as the outgroup. The Proterodiplostomidae was the family with the greatest preponderance of primitive characters and its monophyly was supported by the unique paraprostate gland.
