Parasitic Infections of Freshwater Fish in Kenya: Prevalence Patterns, Ecological Drivers, and Implications for Aquaculture Sustainability. [PDF]

open access: yesJ Parasitol Res
Fish parasitic infections present a growing threat to freshwater aquaculture in Kenya, affecting fish health, reducing productivity, and limiting the economic potential of small‐scale and commercial farms. This review provides the first consolidated national checklist of freshwater fish parasites in Kenya, synthesizing evidence from lakes, rivers, and ...

Competent Non-Native Alternative Host Reduces Infection Success in a Generalist Parasite. [PDF]

open access: yesEcol Evol
In this study, we experimentally assessed how the addition of a non‐native alternative host affects the infection success of the larval generalist trematode, Diplostomum pseudospathaceum, in fish intermediate hosts. Our results demonstrate that the presence of alternative hosts, especially the non‐native ones, can reduce parasite transmission through ...

A fine-scale phylogenetic assessment of digenean trematodes in central Alberta reveals we have yet to uncover their total diversity. [PDF]

open access: yesEcol Evol, 2019
This manuscript represents a large, single, collective examination of larval trematodes from snail hosts, using molecular markers and phylogenetic methods. We contribute 1,091 mitochondrial sequences (cox1 and nad1) that represent 79 species from 23 genera and eight families.

Unlocking the genome of perch – From genes to ecology and back again

open access: yesEcology of Freshwater Fish, Volume 32, Issue 4, Page 677-702, October 2023., 2023
Abstract Eurasian perch Perca fluviatilis has been a popular model species for decades in the fields of aquatic ecology, community dynamics, behaviour, physiology and ecotoxicology. Yet, despite extensive research, the progress of integrating genomic perspective into existing ecological knowledge in perch has been relatively modest.

A global review of problematic and pathogenic parasites of farmed tilapia

open access: yesReviews in Aquaculture, Volume 15, Issue S1, Page 92-153, February 2023., 2023
Abstract Over the past 80 years, tilapia have been translocated globally for aquaculture; active production is recorded in >124 countries. Of 7 million tonnes of tilapia produced in aquaculture, 79% is from 79 countries outside the natural range of tilapia.

Unravelling another mystery: Parasite escape and host‐switching vary spatially in non‐indigenous populations of Japanese mystery snails

open access: yesFreshwater Biology, Volume 67, Issue 8, Page 1316-1332, August 2022., 2022
Abstract Due to anthropogenic mechanisms, global freshwater biodiversity is declining, and non‐indigenous species are consistently cited as a major threat to native ecosystems. In particular, exotic freshwater gastropods and their parasites have invaded ecosystems through deliberate introductions and/or accidental transfer.

Make visible the invisible: Optimized development of an environmental DNA metabarcoding tool for the characterization of trematode parasitic communities

open access: yesEnvironmental DNA, Volume 4, Issue 3, Page 627-641, May 2022., 2022
In this study, we develop an optimized eDNA‐based metabarcoding tool to detect and characterize the trematode communities from environmental and, more specifically water‐sediment interface samples. The efficiency of this new tool is first assessed by an exhaustive in‐silico and in‐vitro validation step and compare to a classical trematode monitoring ...

Validity of the Diplostomoidea and Diplostomida (Digenea, Platyhelminthes) upheld in phylogenomic analysis [PDF]

open access: yesInternational Journal for Parasitology, 2018
Higher systematics within the Digenea, Carus 1863 have been relatively stable since a phylogenetic analysis of partial nuclear ribosomal markers (rDNA) led to the erection of the Diplostomida Olson, Cribb, Tkach, Bray, and Littlewood, 2003. However, recent mitochondrial (mt) genome phylogenies suggest this order might be paraphyletic.
